CLAIMS FIRST USE OF HYPERSONIC MISSILE - RUSSIA
CLAIMS FIRST USE OF HYPERSONIC MISSILE - RUSSIA
RUSSIA : Russia's military has fired a hypersonic ballistic missile and destroyed a big underground arms depot in Western Ukraine, the defence ministry in Moscow reported.
If confirmed it would be Russia's first use in this war of the Kinzhal, or Dagger, ballistic missile launched from the air, most likely by a MiG-31 warplane.
WHAT ARE HYPERSONIC MISSILES ?
President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly highlighted Russia's investment in hypertonic missiles, which can travel at more than five (5) times the speed of sound, or March 05, 2022.
The statistics are impressive: according to Russia officials the Kinzhal can hit a target up to 2,000km (1,240 miles) away and can fly faster than 6,000 km per hour. But does that make them any more dangerous than other missiles or even artillery which can cause just as much death and destruction ?
" I don't view it as that significant, " says James Acton, nuclear policy specialist at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. " I don't know how much of an advantage Russia is getting from using hypersonic missiles."
President Putin boasted last December 2021 that Russia was leading the world in hypersonic missiles, which are hard to track because they can change direction in mid-flight.
Russia posted a video of what it said was its missile strike on the arms depot in Deliatyn, a village in south-western Ukraine only 100km from the border with Romania.
" It's a sign of showmanship. Even if it's used we should consider it as an isolated moment because Russia doesn't have a large number of these missiles," said Dominika Kunertova of the Center for Security Studies in Zurich.
' NOT A GAME - CHANGER '
The Russian leader unveiled the Kinzhal four years ago as one of a series of " invincible " weapons that he said would evade enemy defences. The other hypersonic missiles are the Zirkon and the Avangard, which is both faster and has a far greater range.
The Kinzhal can carry a nuclear warhead as well as a conventional one and recent reports said MiG-31 fighters had been sent to Kaliningrad, bringing numerous European capitals within reach. There is no indication from where the attack on the arms depot was launched.
" It's a signal to the west, because Putin is annoyed that the West is daring to shift all these weapons [to Ukraine]," Ms Kunertova told the BBC. " It's questionable that it's so accurate, so it's not a game changer."
Reported by James Acton, the Kinzhal was thought to be an Iskandar missile that had been modified for fighter jets, and Iskandar-M missiles have already been fired by Russian ground launchers since the start of the war.
Although the Iskandar-M has a far shorter range than the air-launched missile, Ukraine's defence ministry claimed this week that Russia had fired almost all its Iskandar missiles during the first 20 days of the war.
A US defence official was quoted as saying on Friday that Russian forces had fired more than 1,080 missiles since February 24, 2022.
" [That] is an astonishing number and a very significant fraction of Russia's per-war inventory," Mr Acton said to the BBC, pointing to the increasing use of unguided bombs in Russia aerial attacks. " They may very well be running short of accurate munitions."

SOUTH KOREA LOOKS TO END RESTRICTIONS BUT RECORD 621,000 NEW DAILY COVID-19 CASES
SOUTH KOREA LOOKS TO END RESTRICTIONS BUT RECORD 621,000 NEW DAILY COVID-19 CASES
SEOUL : South Kora recorded a record 621,328 new daily COVID-19 cases and a daily record 429 deaths, authorities announced on Thursday (March 17, 2022), as the country which once took an aggressive anti-pandemic approach is set to end COVID-19 about restrictions.
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KCDA) says the highly infectious Omicron variant was driving the record wave of infections and while public survey revealed many expected to catch the virus, few feared serious health consequences.
Daily infections are far higher than health authorities had predicted. On Wednesday (March 16, 2022) the government said it expected the wave to top out with daily cases in the mid-400,000. Less than a month ago it had predicted the peak of the wave would come in mid-March at 140,000-270,000 daily cases.
KDCA official Lee Sang-won also talking about 70,000 cases and 200 deaths were missing in tallies over the past couple of days, apologising for errors in its compiling procedures. But he said the current wave has been stronger than expected and could continue to beat its predictions.
Despite the numbers, the government shows no sign of rethinking plans to remove almost all social distancing restrictions in the coming days and weeks, and public opinion appears to support those moves.
It has pushed back a curfew on eateries to 11 pm, stopped enforcing vaccine passes, and plans to drop a quarantine for vaccinated travellers arriving from overseas.
A decision on whether to ease further measures, such as a current six-person limit on private gatherings, is expected as early as Friday. south Korea also mandates masks in all public indoor and outdoor spaces.
Though it never adopted a " ZERO COVID-19 " policy and never imposed wide lockdowns, South Korea once used aggressive tracking, and quarantines to control new cases. That has been largely ended or scaled back, though it still tests widely.
South Korea has avoided the crisis unfolding in places like Hong Kong, limiting deaths and serious cases largely though widespread vaccination, experts have said.
Nearly 63 per cent of the country's 52 million residents had received booster shots, with 86.6 per cent of the population fully vaccinated, says KDCA.
A government analysis of about 141,000 Omicron cases reported in the country over the past year showed that there were no deaths among people under 60 who had received a booster shot, Son Young-rae, a health ministry official, announced on Wednesday (March 16, 2022), adding that COVID-19 could be treated like the seasonal flu.
" We see this could be the last major crisis in our COVID-19 responses, and if we overcome this crisis, it would bring us nearer to normal lives, " Son told a briefing.
In a survey released on Tuesday by Seoul National University's graduate school of public health, the number of South Koreans who think they are likely to contract the virus was the highest since its surveys began in January 2020, at around 28 per cent, but the number of those who worry about a serious health impact from the infection was the lowest, at about 48 per cent.
" People's awareness about the virus' danger has clearly changed, " said Professor Yoo Myung-Soon who led the study.
" Despite the Omicron variant's much higher infectivity than Delta, its relatively low fatality appears to have alleviated people's concerns.

AGAINTS PHISHING SCAMS IMPERSONATING AS BANKS - SINGAPORE POLICE WARN
AGAINTS PHISHING SCAMS IMPERSONATING AS BANKS - SINGAPORE POLICE WARN
SINGAPORE : The Singapore Police Force (SPF) warned members of the public on Thursday (March 17, 2022) against phishing scams involving the impersonation of banks, such as POSB, HSBC and UOB.
According to the police, the scammers would impersonate banks using three (3) scam variants.
In the first variant, scammers would claim to be conducting surveys via spoofed emails.
Victims would receive an email claiming to be from a bank. The email would indicate that the victim had been selected to participate in a survey and would receive a cash reward upon completion of the survey.
After clicking on the URL embedded within the email, the victims would be redirected to a phishing website to complete the survey. Upon completion of the survey, the victims would be instructed to provide their credit/debit card details and the one-time password (OTP).
Believing that the information was required to process the card reward, the victims would provide the details requested by the website.
Victims would only realise that they have been scammed when they discovered unauthorised transactions made using their credit/debit card.

UNITED STATES AND EU NOT VERIFYING LABOUR CLAIMS - ZURAIDA SLAMS
UNITED STATES AND EU NOT VERIFYING LABOUR CLAIMS - ZURAIDA SLAMS
KUALA LUMPUR : Foreign agencies accusing Malaysia palm oil companies of practising forced labour came under attack from plantation industries and commodities minister Zuraida Kamaruddin.
Giving her winding-up speech on March 16, 2022 on the King's address in the Dewan Rakyat, the minister said the accusations from NGOs and activists were unfounded.
" The people who made such allegations did it after visiting a plantation and interviewing one worker," she said.
She said she would highlight this matter when she goes to the United States to meet its Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency as well as to the European Union (EU) to dispute their rationale behind the import ban imposed on the country's palm oil products.
" My main contention will be that there must be proper verification on these forced labour claims.
" To date, no verification has been done. They just hurl their accusations and then they will impose their sanctions," Zuraida said, adding that it was unfair to the companies involved.
She also called for the CBP and EU to have a proper verification process and inform the companies accordingly.
" They should go down to the ground and investigate these forced labour claims. Only then should they impose sanctions.
" Then, the ministry would be prepared to improve the conditions. But that is not the case at present," she said.
On March 08, 2022, human resources minister M Saravanan told the Dewan Rakyat that the CBP had not given any details of the offences committed but just went ahead and issues a withold release order (WRO) on products from some Malaysian companies.
Saravanan said the labour department's probe into the 11 indicators, as specified under the International Labour Organization (ILO) as " forced labour ", revealed no breach whatsover.
Earlier in her speech, Zuraida said she would be heading to the United States embassy on Thursday, March 17, 2022 to get a new date for her delegation to travel to the country and meet with CBP to present the ministry's arguments to dispute the WRO issued in year 2020 on palm oil and products containing palm oil produced by Sime Darby Plantation (SBP) and its subsidiaries, following allegations of forced labour practices.
She said the parolee working programme was done in accordance with several Sustainable Development Goals to provide second chances to these prisoners.
She said she intended to argue against labelling these parolees as " FORCED LABOUR".

TRAVELLERS FROM SINGAPORE, THAILAND & CAMBODIA DON'T HAVE TO WAIT FOR COVID-19 TEST RESULTS ON ARRIVAL IN MALAYSIA
TRAVELLERS FROM SINGAPORE, THAILAND & CAMBODIA DON'T HAVE TO WAIT FOR COVID-19 TEST RESULTS ON ARRIVAL IN MALAYSIA
KUALA LUMPUR (March 16, 2022) : The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has announced the standard operating procedures for the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) between Malaysia and Singapore, Thailand and Cambodia will now follow the "Test and Release" method, which means travellers no longer need to wait for their COVID-19 test results before being allowed to continue on their journey.
Instead, a traveller only has to take a COVID-19 swab test upon arrival and can then proceed to their respective accommodation via private transport, taxi or other hired vehicle, as declared in the MySejahtera Home Surveillance Order.
" They must then self-isolate whilst awaiting their COVID-19 test results, which will be given within 24 hours. They will be cleared from isolation upon a negative test result. In the event of a positive result, travellers are to comply with existing health protocols prescribed by the Ministry of Health," said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong in a statement.
The MoT said the streamlining o the VTL entry process is to reduce ambiguity in the VTL By Air initiative for travellers entering Malaysia, and to facilitate enforcement at air terminals, adding that it applies to all VTL arrivals at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and the Penang International Airport from Wednesday (March 16, 2022) onwards.
At the start of March 2022, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that Malaysia would transition into the endemic phase from April 01, 2022, and would reopen its borders on the same date.

LEE ZII JIA AKUI TIDAK SETANDING LAKSHYA SEN - ALL ENGLAND BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIP
PETALING JAYA, SELANGOR, MALAYSIA : Defending champion Lee Zii Jia proved failed to make it to the Final of The All-England Badminton Championship in Birmingham, England after he lost to Indian Champion Lakshya Sen in three (3) hard-fought games.
After losing the first game 13-21, the Malaysian national champion regained his composure and led from the beginning in the second game, returning many shots that appeared impossible to return at times.
With a large group of Malaysian supporters cheering him on, he won easily 21-12, in a game filled with some long rallies to force a rubber set.
After the breather, Zii Jia started nervously losing two straight points. However, he stopped Lakshya in his tracks and raced to a 4-3 lead within five (5) minutes. Both players were then engaged in a point for point battle.
After 10 minutes playing of the rubber, the players were tied at 8-8, with both making unforced errors. Zii Jia, who left the Badminton Association of Malaysia to go professional in January 2022, then took the lead at 11-9 play.
After the changeover, Zii Jia raced to a 16-13 lead five (5) minutes into play.
The ding-dong battle continued until they reached 18-18 but Lakshya changed the pace to win 21-19.

NO IMPACT TO MALAYSIAN DEFENCE ASSETS WHEN RUSSIA - UKRAINE CONFLICT - SAYS HISHAM
NO IMPACT TO MALAYSIAN DEFENCE ASSETS WHEN RUSSIA - UKRAINE CONFLICT - SAYS HISHAM
KUALA LUMPUR : Russia's invasion of Ukraine has no impact on Malaysia's defence assets and the readiness of its armed forces, says defence minister Hishammuddin Hussein.
Although the defence ministry (Mindef) has a contract with Russia for the supply of Sukhoi Su-30MKM aircraft spare parts, Hishammuddin told the Dewan Rakyat that Malaysia was looking at other countries to source for arms and munitions.
" The on-going Russia-Ukraine conflict has no major implications on the procurement and planning of national defence assets, nor on the readiness of the armed forces to protect our national security, stability and sovereignty.
" Malaysia has sufficient stocks of spare parts to maintain its Sukhoi aircraft for another two (2) years.
" To ensure the readiness of our armed forces' assets, Mindef will expand its sourcing of spare parts to other countries which use the same technology, such as India," he said.
The Sembrong MP said Mindef had been looking to reduce Malaysia's dependence on Russia for military assets long before the country's current conflict with Ukraine.
Apart from spare parts for the Sukhoi aircraft, Mindef also has a contract with Russia for the supply of Metis-M anti-tank missiles.
Meanwhile, on the unilateral sanctions against Russia, Hishammuddin reiterated comments made last week by foreign minister Saifuddin Abdullah on Malaysia's stance.
Hishammuddin said any sanctions must be implemented through the United Nations.
He also echoed comments by the international trade and industry ministry that trade relations between Malaysia and Russia were at a minimum.
