US Will End COVID-19 Testing Requirement For Air Travelers Entering The Country
The Biden administration is expected to announce on Friday, (June 10, 2022) that the United States Centers for Disease Control & Prevention will lift its requirement for travelers to test negative for COVID-19 before entering the United States, according to a senior administration official.
The move, which CNN was first to report, will go into effect for United States-bound air travelers at midnight on Sunday, June 12, 2022.
The CDC is lifting the restriction that the travel industry had lobbied against for months after determining it was no longer necessary " based on the science and data," the official said. The CDC will reassess its decision in 90 days and if officials decide they need to reinstate it, because of a concerning new variant, for example, will do so. The measure has been in place since January 2021.
The official said the Biden administration plans to work with airlines to ensure a smooth transition with the change, but it will likely be a welcome move for most in the industry.
Travel industry officials have been increasingly critical of the requirement in recent weeks and directly urged the Biden administration to end the measure, arguing it was having a chilling effect on an already fragile economy, according to Airlines for America Chief Nick Calio, whose group met recently with White House Officials.
The travel industry, and some scientific experts, said the policy had been out of date for months.
Lawmakers, including Democrats, had also advocated for lifting the requirement in recent weeks.
Nevada Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto said," I'm glad CDC suspended the burdensome coronavirus testing requirement for international travelers, and I'll continue to do all I can to support the strong recovery of our hospitality industry."
White House officials met last month with travel industry officials, who pressed the Biden administration to end its requirements that vaccinated international travelers take a coronavirus test before flying to the United States.
Airlines for America said its members-including American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines - had believed lifting the requirements would lead more foreigners to visit the United States.
The trade association told CNN that in mid-May, domestic travel came within 7 percentage points of pre-pandemic levels, but international travel lagged at 14% below normal.
United States Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow praised the decision.
" Prior to the pandemic, travel was one of our nation's largest industry exports. The lifting of this requirement will enable the industry to lead the way toward a broader United States economic and jobs recovery," Dow said in a statement.
The industry has criticized the policy as out of date for months, and some medical experts have also questioned its utility.
Testing international arrivals doesn't make much sense to Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious diseases specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
" I've been bemused about that for a long time because we've trying to keep COVID-19 out," Schaffner told CNN in March, year 2022. " It's Here Already."

SOUTHERN GERMANY ABOUT DEADLY TRAIN DERAILMENT
At least three (3) people were killed and about 60 injured when a train derailed in Germany's south-eastern state of Bavaria, police said.
The train, which was carrying many students, was heading to Munich when three (3) carriages came off the tracks near Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
It is unclear what caused the accident, a police spokesperson said.
Images published by local media show several crumpled train carriages lying on their sides.
Sixteen (16) of the injured were in a serious condition, a spokesperson for the Garmisch-Partenkirchen local authority told reporters.
Six (6) helicopters, including three (3) scrambled from the Austrian region of Tyrol, have been on the scene to assist as rescue efforts continue.
" People are being pulled through the windows, " police said. Police say that it cannot be ruled out that a number of students celebrating the beginning of the summer holidays are among those injured.
The accident happened at around 1315 local time (11:15 GMT), shortly after the train left Garmisch-Partenkirchen for Munich.
Part of the route between Munich and Garmisch-Parternkirchen has been blocked off and traffic has been diverted, German rail operator Deutsche Bahn says.
A United States based at a nearby air base was driving past when the train derailed. He told local media the accident had been " just awful - suddenly the train overturned".
Germany's deadliest rail crash in modern times occurred in 1998 when a high-speed train derailed in Eschede in Lower Saxony, killing 101 people.
The country's most recent fatal crash took place in February 2022, when one person was killed and 14 others were injured in a collision between two (2) trains near Munich.

" WAIT FOR RIGHT TIME " TO CALL GE15 AS INFLATION SQUEEZES MALAYSIA - SAID PM ISMAIL SABRI
KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, TUESDAY (MAY 31, 2022): With Malaysia facing rising inflation, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has indicated that he is in no rush to call for a general election anytime soon, contrary to speculation that polls may be held before the year ends.
He told Nikkei Asia in a interview published on Tuesday, that rising costs in food and other living expenses were among the reasons to push back the elections, which only need to be called by September next year.
" We will have to wait for the right time [to call for elections]. We are facing a period of increasing inflation with high prices...Do you think this is the right time?" he told the Japanese financial paper, the largest in the world with a daily circulation surpassing three million.
According to the report, the Prime Minister has been under pressure by many, including members of his own party UMNO, to call for an early election.
" The election cannot be delayed further than the timeline set in the constitution, but to make it earlier, we have to look at the current situation.
" God Willing, I'll make the move at the right time," he was quoted saying.
Ismail Sabri alluded to the Russia-Ukraine war driving up the Consumer Price Index to 2.2 per cent in March year 2022, according to Malaysia's Statistics Department, mostly due to increasing food costs.
In the interview with Nikkei, the UMNO Vice-President also indicated that he is keen to bring back consumption tax to expand the government's revenue and ease the strain on public subsidies.
Malaysia's controversial 6 per cent goods and services tax (GST) was introduced in 2016 by the Najib administration, but replaced with the sales and services tax the Pakatan Harapan coalition took federal power after winning Election 2018.
Aware of the negative public perceptions of the GST, Ismail Sabri told the Nikkei Asia that there aren't many options for increasing revenue.
He said that RM 20 billion was lost in annual revenue when the GST was abolished and replaced with the SST.
" No country in the world has reverted back from GST to SST, except for Malaysia," he was quoted saying.
He added that the government would come up with ways to educate the public to accept the reinstitution of GST and transparent tax collection.
He also stressed that his administration is working on a targeted subsidy rationalisation program for low-to middle-income households and will submit the plan to the Cabinet in due time.
Nikkei Asia reported that Malaysia's central bank is supportive of the move to reintroduce the GST as it will heavily relieve the government's financial burden.
The paper added that a prolonged European war could push up prices of fuel and imported food items further, squeezing the government's finances dry.
According to Nikkei, the government's total fuel subsidy bill is expected to be RM 28 billion this year, spike from last year's RM 11 billion.

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - Iran's hard-line president vowed revenge on Monday, May 23, 2022 over the killing of a senior Revolutionary Guard member gunned down in the heart of Tehran the day before a still-mysterious attack on the country's powerful paramilitary force.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi hailed Col. Hassan Sayyad Khodaei as a martyr and blamed " the hand of global arrogance," a reference to the United States and its allies, including Israel, for his slaying.
There has been no claim of responsibility for the killing, carried out on Sunday afternoon by two (2) unidentified gunmen on a motorbike. They shot Khodaei five (5) times in a car, an unarmored SAIPA Pride - among the cheapest, most-common Iranian vehicles.
But the style of the brazen attack bore the hallmarks of previous slayings in Iran blamed on Israel, such as those targeting the country's nuclear scientists.
" I have no doubt that revenge against the criminals for the blood of this martyr is assured," Raisi said before leaving Tehran for a state visit to the sultanate of Oman, a strategic Gulf Arab state that traditionally mediates between Tehran and the West.
His remarks signaled Khodaei's prominence in the musky structure of the Guard, which exerts extensive control inside Iran and across the Middle East via allied militias. In yet another sign of Khodaei's power, Tehran city council announced it would name a street after him.
The Guard identified Khodaei as a " defender of the shrine," a reference to Iranians who fight against the extremist Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq within the elite Quds force that oversees operations abroad.
While Iran has yet to offer any definitive biographic information on Khodaei, Israeli media on Sunday night, May 22, 2022 ran simultaneous stories alleging Khodaei had organized plots against Israeli diplomats, businesspeople and other foreign officials abroad.
The news reports, all of which ran without attribution, suggest Israeli intelligence officials briefed journalists on the Iranian colonel. There was no official comment from the Israeli government.
Iran has accused Israel of carrying out similar motorbike slayings targeting Iranian nuclear scientists a decade ago. In the year 2021, Iran blamed Israel for a particularly high-tech killing that targeted Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, the country's chief nuclear scientist that masterminded the Islamic Republic's disbanded military nuclear program. A remote-controlled machine gun killed him on a country road.
While Tehran has reacted with condemnation, officials have not acknowledged Khodaei's particular loss to the Guard. Iran will hold a funeral ceremony on Tuesday, local media reported.

MONKEYPOX CASES IN SWITZERLAND AND ISRAEL - CONFIRM
ISRAEL AND SWITZERLAND are the latest countries to confirm cases of monkeypox, bringing the total number of nations reporting outbreaks to 14.
Both countries said they identified one infected person who had recently travelled, but Israel said it was investigating other suspected cases.
More than 80 cases have been confirmed in the recent outbreak in Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia.
Monkeypox is most common in remote parts of Central and West Africa.
This outbreak has taken scientists by surprise, but monkeypox does not tend to spread easily between people and the risk to the wider public is said to be low.
The illness is usually mild and most people recover in a few weeks, according to the United Kingdom's National Health Service.
MONKEYPOX ANALYSIS :
The World Health Organization has said another 50 suspected cases are being investigated - without naming the countries involved - and warned that more infections are likely to be confirmed.
Asked about the outbreak as he finished a visit to South Korea, United States President Joe Biden said that if the virus were to spread more widely it would be " consequential ", adding that " it is something that everybody should be concerned about ".
He said the United States was " working hard " on its response and what vaccines in might use.
After the outbreak was first identified in the United Kingdom, the virus began to be detected across Europe - with public health agencies in Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, France, The Netherlands, Italy and Sweden all confirming cases.
Although there is no specific vaccine for monkeypox, several countries have said they are stocking up on smallpox vaccines, which are about 85% effective in preventing infection because the two (2) viruses are quite similar.
WHAT IS MONKEYPOX ?
1- SYMPTOMS MONKEYPOX
>>>fever, headaches, swellings, aching muscles and exhaustion
>>>itchy rash and lesions - mainly on face, hands and feet
2- HOW MONKEYPOX SPREAD ?
>>>close contact with an infected person or animal
>>>touching clothing or bedding used by someone with the rash
3- MONKEYPOX TREATMENT
>>>smallpox vaccine and antiviral drugs can help relieve symptoms of monkeypox
In a statement on Friday, 21 May 2022, the WHO said that the recent outbreaks were unusual in that they were occurring in countries where the disease was not endemic.
It is not yet clearly why this unexpected outbreak is happening now
One possibility is that the virus has changed in some way, although currently there is little evidence to suggest this is a new variant.
Another explanation is that the virus has found itself in the right place at the right time to thrive.
Monkeypox may also spread more easily than it did in the past, when the smallpox vaccine was widely used.
The WHO's regional director for Europe, Hans Kluge, has warned that " transmission could accelerate " during the summer season, as people gather for festivals and parties.
In addition to the European cases, Australia has confirmed that one man who had travelled to the United Kingdom contracted the virus.
In North America, health authorities in the United States of Massachusetts said one man who recently travelled to Canada had tested positive for the virus.
Canada's Public Health Agency said ti had identified two cases in Quebec, but said it was not clear if the United States traveller had been infected before or during his visit to Montreal.
