STUNS SINGAPORE'S WORLD CHAMPION IN BIRMINGHAM 2022 - TSE YONG
KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, AUGUST 06, 2022: High-flying national men's singles Ng Tze Yong stunned reigning world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore to reach the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games on Saturday, August 06, 2022.
The 22-year-old debutant, who was inspirational for Malaysia in the mixed team final on Tuesday, produced another rousing performance at the NEC Hall in Birmingham, bouncing back from a game down to see off world No 9 Kean Yew, 15-21, 21-14, 21-11.
Tze Yong, ranked No 42 in the world, will play the winner of the match between India's K. Srikanth and England's Toby Penty next for a place in the gold medal match.
On Tuesday, Tze Yong defied the odds to see off Srikanth, en route to Malaysia reclaiming the mixed team gold after defeating India 3-1 in the final.
There was more good news for the Johor-born, who also made the cut for the World Championships in Tokyo on Aug 22-28, after receiving confirmation that he has been promoted from the reserve list following the withdrawal of Indonesia's Shesar Hiren Rhustavito.
Meanwhile, in the women's singles last eight, two-time former world junior champion Goh Jin Wei put up another gallant fight against former world champion, P.V. Sindhu of India, before succumbing 19-21, 21-14, 21-18.
Jin Wei's defeat meant that Malaysia's interest has ended in the women's singles event.
