Poland plans to become the first NATO ally to hand out warplanes to Ukraine

New phase for weapon supply

That meeting started what has been called by European media a "new phase" of weapon supply and support to Ukraine after the Russian invasion, with around a dozen countries agreeing to send tanks.

Many more weapons needed than in other wars

The weapons market was ready to supply for colder conflicts, like NATO's long engagement in Afghanistan.

"Dwindling" supplies

One U.S. official told CNN last year that the stockpiles of some systems were "dwindling," as there was a "finite amount" of excess stocks that the country had available to send. CNN also revealed that allies were concerned about meeting Ukrainian demand for artillery ammunition.

Dominant American industry

The European defense industry has shrunk since the cold war. Arsenals stopped being a priority for these countries, and a dominant American industry elbowed some foreign competitors by pursuing contracts for the low European demand.

Zelensky's plead

During the defense meeting in Ramstein, Zelensky urged the delegates to act fast: "Russia is concentrating its forces, last forces, trying to convince everyone that hatred can be stronger than the world," he said in his speech, collected by The Guardian. "It is about what kind of world people will live in, people who dream, love, and hope."
