THIRD MASSIVE WHALE IN A MONTH BEACHES ITSELF, DIES IN BALI INDONESIAN

@Jackie San

DENPASAR, INDONESIA: A 17-metre-long (56-foot-long) sperm whale died after washing up on a beach in Bali, a conservation official said Sunday, making it the third whale that beached itself on the Indonesian island in just a little over a week.

The male sperm whale was found stranded on Yeh Leh beach in west Bali's Jembrana district on Saturday afternoon.

"We are currently trying to pull the carcass to the shore to make it easier for the necropsy test and we will bury it after the test is concluded," Permana Yudiarso, a local marine and fisheries official, told AFP Sunday.

This is the third whale that has beached itself in Bali, a popular destination for holidaymakers, in April alone.

On Wednesday, an 18-metre-long male sperm whale was stranded in Klungkung district, on Bali's eastern coast.

Before that, a Bryde's whale weighing more than two tonnes and at least 11 metres long was founded stranded on a beach in Tabanan on April 1 -- its carcass already rotted when discovered by locals.

Yudiarso told AFP that their initial suspicion is that the sperm whale found Saturday also died of sickness, "just like the whale found stranded a few days ago".

"The body looked skinny and sickly," he said.

Yudiarso said it would take at least three weeks for the necropsy test to be concluded but forensic experts found some bleeding in the whale's lungs and its colon was filled with fluids.

Police have cordoned off the location to prevent people from stealing the mammal's meat or body parts.

In 2018, a sperm whale was found dead in Indonesia with more than 100 plastic cups and 25 plastic bags in its stomach, raising concerns about the Southeast Asian archipelago's massive marine rubbish problem.

Indonesia is the world's second-biggest contributor to marine debris after China.

TWO BUILDINGS COLLAPSE IN MARSEILLE, UP TO 10 PEOPLE STILL UNDER RUBBLE

TWO BUILDINGS COLLAPSE IN MARSEILLE, UP TO 10 PEOPLE STILL UNDER RUBBLE

"Firefighters stand next to a truck moving rubbles where a building collapsed in Marseille, southern France, on April 9, 2023. - "We have to be prepared to have victims," the mayor of Marseille warned on April 9, 2023 after a four-storey apartment building collapsed in the centre of France's second city, injuring five people, according to a provisional report."

@Jackie San

PARIS: As many as 10 people were thought to be under the rubble after an explosion that caused two residential buildings to collapse in the southern French city of Marseille on Sunday, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said.

The cause of the explosion was not yet known.

The collapse caused a fire that complicated rescue efforts and that Darmanin said could take hours to put out.

He said authorities estimated there were between four and 10 people under the rubble.

Five people were taken to hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries and a sixth person was being treated for shock, he added.

A third building has partially collapsed and people have been evacuated from some 30 buildings in the area.

The buildings that collapsed on the Rue de Tivoli were not known to have any structural problem, Darmanin said.

"Thoughts are with Marseille," President Emmanuel Macron said in a Twitter message.

UNITED STATES MAY BE PREPARING BIOLOGICAL WAR, CLAIMS RUSSIAN OFFICIAL - REPORT

@Jackie San

KUALA LUMPUR (April 26): Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolay Patrushev has urged Russia to counteract US efforts to launch a biological war against it and other countries.

In a report on Tuesday (April 25), Russian state-owned news agency TASS quoted Patrushev as saying that specific biological research being used by the US in developing military programmes requires the closest attention of the scientific community, and calling for proactive efforts to counteract preparations for a biological war against Russia and other countries.

It said Patrushev elaborated on technological breakthroughs that he said "may affect the global balance of power further down the road".

He referred to "an avalanche-like increase in global research in the sphere of IT and quantum technology, as well as AI".

"Experts claim that the use of such technologies can [lead to] and has already prompted a social transformation," he said.

STUDENT IN IRAN CONTINUING POISONINGS - SCHOOLGIRL ACROSS IRAN

STUDENT IN IRAN CONTINUING POISONINGS - SCHOOLGIRL ACROSS IRAN

@Jackie San

TEHRAN, IRAN (April 8, 2023): Dozens of schoolgirls were poisoned today in several schools across Iran, local media reported, in continuation of the mysterious phenomenon that has shaken the country for months.

Since late November many schools, mostly for girls, have been affected by sudden poisoning incidents from gases or toxic substances, in some cases causing fainting and hospitalisation among the students.

At least “60 students were poisoned in a girls’ school in the town of Haftkel” in the oil-rich southwestern province of Khuzestan, state television’s IRIB news agency cited a local official as saying.

A number of schoolgirls were poisoned in “five schools in Ardabil in the northwest”, where the victims showed symptoms of “anxiety, shortness of breath and headaches”, a provincial medical official told the news agency.

In the northwestern town of Urmia, capital of West Azerbaijan province, “a number of schoolgirls were taken to hospital today after feeling sick”, ILNA news agency reported without further elaboration.

According to an official count provided on March 7, “more than 5,000 students” have been affected by similar poisonings in more than 230 establishments, located in 25 of the country’s 31 provinces.

On Friday MP Hamidreza Kazemi, the head of the national fact-finding committee formed to investigate these cases, specified that “the final report” would be published “in two weeks”.

“We have received reports from various bodies and we are studying the issue in order to present our conclusion to parliament,” he was quoted as saying by state television.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had called on March 6 for “severe sentences” up to the death penalty against those found responsible for the poisonings, which he described as “unforgivable crimes”.

The poisoning cases began two months after the start of a protest movement in Iran sparked by the September 16 death in custody of Mahsa Amini, 22, following her arrest for allegedly violating the strict dress code for women.

@Jackie San

KOTA KINABALU, SABAH (April 9, 2023): A foreign man stabbed his wife to death in an alleged fit of jealousy at a vegetable stall along Jalan Pahlawan, Kepayan on Saturday.

In the 1.30pm incident, the victim working as a 38-year-old food shop assistant was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital 1 but succumbed to serious injuries.

It is understood that members of the public had witnessed the incident and reported the matter to police.

Kota Kinabalu District Acting Police Chief Superintendent Kalsom Idris said preliminary investigation found that the victim was helping her sister sell vegetables when the incident occurred.

“The suspect had approached the victim and stabbed her several times in the back before running away.
“The victim was then taken to the hospital in an ambulance but was pronounced dead at 2.21pm,” he said when contacted on Sunday.

Kalsom said a police team from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Kota Kinabalu District Police Headquarters acting on information managed to arrest the suspect along Jalan Kepayan around 8.30pm on Saturday.

“Police managed to solve this case in less than 24 hours and the motive behind the incident is believed to be jealousy.

MALAYSIA COMMITTED TO PROTECT ITS MARITIME AREAS IN SOUTH CHINA SEA : FOREIGN MINISTRY

MALAYSIA COMMITTED TO PROTECT ITS MARITIME AREAS IN SOUTH CHINA SEA : FOREIGN MINISTRY

@Jackie San

KUALA LUMPUR (April 8, 2023): The Malaysian government is firmly committed to protecting the country’s sovereignty, sovereign rights and interests in its maritime areas in the South China Sea as depicted by its 1979 Map.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement today said Malaysia’s position on the South China Sea is consistent and remained unchanged.

“Malaysia firmly holds the view that matters relating to the South China Sea must be resolved peacefully and constructively, in accordance with the universally recognised principles of international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (1982 UNCLOS),” the ministry said.

The ministry said that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim used the term ‘negotiation’ during the Prime Minister’s Question Time at Parliament on April 4 to mean that issues relating to the South China Sea should be discussed in a peaceful manner.

It said he meant that discussions on the South China Sea should be held on existing platforms and through diplomatic channels to avoid disputes and the use of force.

“In our common efforts to maintain the South China Sea as a sea of peace, stability and trade, it is therefore within this context that Malaysia will continue the diplomatic approach in our engagements with other States, including China,” it said.

The ministry said this is in line with the provisions of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) ass signed by Asean Member States and China in 2002.

It said this is the same approach taken during ongoing negotiations between Asean Member States and China to conclude the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea.

“Asean Member States and China are committed to the negotiations towards a Code of Conduct that is in accordance with international law, including the 1982 UNCLOS,” it said.

PUTRAJAYA RETURNS SARAWAK ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT BACK UNDER MA63 : SHARIFAH HASIDAH

PUTRAJAYA RETURNS SARAWAK ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT BACK UNDER MA63 :

SHARIFAH HASIDAH

@Jackie San

KUCHING SARAWAK (April 5, 2023): The federal government has handed over matters related to Sarawak’s environmental management back to the state through devolution under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), revealed Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.

“I think they have already decided under MA63, matters related to the environment have been handed over to the state government.

“With the devolution of power Sarawak can not only gain full control of matters related to the environment, but also be responsible for managing scheduled waste,” said the Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring).

She told reporters after launching a Ramdan charity event at the Juma’ani Pavilion here today.

Adding on, Sharifah Hasidah said, however, that further negotiations on scheduled waste management between the federal and the Sarawak government are still ongoing.

This is because this needs to be specifically examined by the Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) as well.

“NREB needs to look into this matter and if they need to work with relevant parties at the federal level, I think they need to hold discussions and negotiations.

“But so far, environmental matters under MA63 have been handed over to the Sarawak government and the state has the right to manage the matter,” she said.

The Samariang assemblywoman hopes that the parties involved will hold a discussion on this scheduled waste and also hopes that the discussion will continue.

This is because, according to her, Sarawak had officials, civil servants who were committed while she is confident that the responsible officials would look into this matter for the future of the state.

SIBUJAYA'S GREEN LUNG PROJECT SEES COMMUNITY CELEBRATING RICE HARVEST

SIBUJAYA'S GREEN LUNG PROJECT SEES COMMUNITY CELEBRATING RICE HARVEST

@Jackie San

SIBU (April 7, 2023 ): A 14-acre open land area in Sibujaya area turned into a green lung project has seen the community participants celebrating their rice harvest.

Sibu Rural District Council chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said the effort was an initiative of Sibujaya developer Amcorp.

”This programme is very beneficial to the participants because they also get results from the rice grown on land owned by Amcorp.

”It is clear that the objective of this programme has been achieved where the participants consisting of the Sibujaya community itself and Amcorp have succeeded in greening the open land area and in addition to that the participants get results from the harvest,” he said in a speech read by councillor Teo Boon Siew for the rice harvesting event yesterday.

He said the programme would also indirectly help participants improve their income, while Amcorp ensures a beautiful and attractive green landscape.

”I hope this programme can continue this year and SRDC always supports programmes like this,” he said.

The programme was inspired by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who called for a green lung in Sibujaya when he was Housing Minister.

AUSTRALIAN MAN CHARGED AFTER TAKING PLATYPUS ON TRAIN RIDE, SHOPPING TRIP

AUSTRALIAN MAN CHARGED AFTER TAKING PLATYPUS ON TRAIN RIDE, SHOPPING TRIP

@Jackie San

SYDNEY (April 6, 2023): Forget the Hollywood thriller “Snakes on a Plane”, an Australian man is in trouble for taking a platypus on a train.

Police launched a public appeal after the 26-year-old man, accompanied by a woman, was spotted on a suburban train with a wild platypus swaddled in a towel.

The man, who faces court Saturday over alleged animal protection offences, is accused of removing the elusive critter from a waterway in northern Queensland and taking it on a train trip to a shopping centre.

“It will be further alleged the pair were observed showing the animal to members of the public at the shopping centre,” Queensland police said in a statement.

Railway officers nabbed the man, and they have spoken to the woman who was with him, police said.

But the platypus’ fate is a mystery.

“Police were advised the animal was released into the Caboolture River and has not yet been located by authorities,” police said.

“Its condition is unknown.”

CCTV photos from Tuesday showed a man in flip-flops strolling along a train platform north of Brisbane while cradling the platypus — about the size of a kitten — under his arm.

The man and his female companion then wrapped it in a towel, “patting it and showing it to fellow commuters”, police said.

Under Queensland’s conservation laws, it is illegal to take “one or more” platypus from the wild, with a maximum fine of Aus$430,000 (US$288,000).

“Taking a platypus from the wild is not only illegal, but it can be dangerous for both the displaced animal and the person involved if the platypus is male as they have venomous spurs,” police said.

“If you are lucky enough to see a platypus in the wild, keep your distance.”

With stubby tails like a beaver and the bill of a duck, platypuses were famously seen as a hoax by British scientists encountering their first specimen in the late 18th century.

Platypuses are native to Australia’s freshwater rivers and are part of a rare group of mammals — the monotremes — that lay eggs.
