ILLEGAL OCUPYING & CLEARING LAND IN MATANG ROAD - LAND AND SURVEY DEPARTMENT WARNING

KUCHING, SARAWAK (April 15, 2023): The Land and Survey Department has warned unscrupulous parties to stop occupying and clearing land in the Matang area here without permission.

In a statement today, the department said their team had discovered that vast areas along the new Matang road, particularly on both sides of Jalan Pehin Sri Adenan, had been illegally cleared and occupied by people.

It said many of the individuals occupying the land were also found to plant crops there, giving an impression that they actually owned the land.

“Our intelligence information has indicated that a ring leader of the group has been identified in organising illegal transactions, purportedly giving promises that the land can be theirs through processes coordinated by this group.”

The department said several images had been widely circulated on social media showing the individuals involved in registering names as well as collecting deposits from the public for them to use the land in return.

“Members of the public are advised to not fall into the traps of sweet promises and schemes that can subsequently lead them into trouble and even worse, facing criminal prosecution.”

The department said the individuals involved must stop their act before measures would be taken against them pursuant to Sarawak Land Code and other provisions in the Penal Code pertaining to illegally collecting deposits and the probability of engaging in deceiving and cheating activities.

“The state government is not responsible for any loss of investment made by them (the public) associated to this unauthorised and illegal transaction.”

Nonetheless, the department said enforcement actions under the Sarawak Land Code would commence and the actions would include demolishing the illegal structures constructed on the ground and evicting the people illegally occupying the land, aside from engaging in legal proceedings.

“Members of the public are also advised to submit official applications to the Land and Survey Department should they require residential lots.”

It said the state government would provide lots for residential purposes via relocation scheme (SPS) and village expansion scheme (SPK).

“The state government will continue to plan and implement the development of SPS and SPK to accommodate the needs for residential lots by the target group for the schemes,” it said.
