EMPLOYEE OF REGIONAL POLICE DEPARTMENT ARRESTED FOR ASSAULTING MAN WITH UMBRELLA -JAPAN
OSAKA
Osaka Prefectural Police have arrested a 56-year-old man on suspicion of assault after he hit a 64-year-old man in the face with an umbrella while they were on a train platform.
Police said the suspect, Akihiro Hotta, who lives in Izumi City, is employed at the Kinki Regional Police Department’s Osaka Prefectural Informational and Communication Division.
According to police, Hotta was arguing with the other man on the platform at Komyoike Station in Sakai City’s Minami Ward at around 5:50 p.m. on Monday, Kyodo News reported. During the argument, Hotta hit the man in the face with an umbrella, causing him to suffer a broken nose.
Police said witnesses told them the two men began arguing after the victim leaned on Hotta’s umbrella during the train ride. After the train stopped at the station, they continued arguing on the platform.
Two station employees managed to pull the men apart and call the police.
Police said Hotta has denied the charge and quoted him as saying, “The umbrella I was holding happened to hit the man while we were arguing.”
