RUSSIAN TROOPS ADVANCING IN 'FIERCE FIGHTHING' - UKRAINE SAID

RUSSIAN TROOPS ADVANCING IN 'FIERCE FIGHTHING' - UKRAINE SAID

@Jackie San

Ukraine said on Sunday that Russian troops were advancing in four areas in the east of the country amid "fierce fighting" but reported its forces moving forward in the south.

Deputy Defense Minister Ganna Maliar said that Russian troops were advancing near Avdiivka, Mariinka, Lyman and Svatove.

"Fierce fighting is going on everywhere," Maliar wrote on social media, adding: "The situation is quite complicated".

Ukrainian forces have made gradual progress in their counteroffensive launched last month but have so far failed to produce a major breakthrough and have urged Western allies to escalate pledges of military support.

The latest developments on the battlefield came after Ukrainian officials said Russia launched its first overnight drone attack on the capital Kyiv in 12 days.

Ukraine said all the drones were downed.

Maliar also said Ukrainian troops were advancing with "partial success" on the southern flank of Bakhmut in the east and near Berdyansk and Melitopol in the south.

In the south, she said Ukrainian forces faced "intense enemy resistance, remote mining, deploying of reserves" and were only advancing "gradually".

"They are persistently and unceasingly creating conditions for as fast an advance as possible," she added.

Ukraine's military commander-in-chief Valery Zaluzhny expressed frustration in an interview published Friday at the slow deliveries of weaponry promised by the West.

It "pisses me off" that some in the West complain about the slow start and progress to the long-awaited push against Russian occupying forces, he told the Washington Post.

Zaluzhny said his Western supporters would not themselves launch an offensive without air superiority, but Ukraine is still awaiting F-16 fighter jets promised by its allies.

"I do not need 120 planes. I'm not going to threaten the whole world. A very limited number would be enough," he told the newspaper.

He also complained he has a fraction of the artillery shells that Russia is firing.

"A lot of people die every day -- a lot. Just because no decision has been made yet," Zaluzhny said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also spoke about F-16 training on Saturday during a visit to Kyiv by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

"I believe that some partners are dragging their feet," Zelenskyy said, referring to F-16 training for Ukrainian pilots.

A coalition of Kyiv's European backers led by the Netherlands and Denmark has said it will help teach Ukrainian pilots, after the United States gave its green light in May.

Dutch Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren last month said the training could start this summer.

U.S. Pentagon Joint Chiefs Chairman General Mark Milley has assured that the United States and allies are giving them as much help as humanly possible".

He acknowledged that some people had expressed impatience with the pace of the counteroffensive.

"Sure, it goes a little slow but that is part of the nature of war," he said.

Ukraine has meanwhile become increasingly adept at taking down Russian cruise missiles and drones after appealing to Western allies for greater air defence capabilities.

On Sunday, Ukrainian officials said they had successfully neutralised a new drone attack on Kyiv.

"All enemy targets in the airspace around Kyiv were detected and destroyed," said Sergiy Popko, head of the Kyiv city military administration.

In a separate statement, Ukraine's air force said Sunday that it had shot down three cruise missiles and eight Iranian-made attack drones deployed by Moscow's forces overnight.

"Eight Shaheds were launched from the southeast, and three Kalibr missiles were launched from the Black Sea," the air force said.

It did not provide any details on the Kyiv attacks.

Ruslan Kravchenko, head of the Kyiv regional military administration, said that three houses were damaged by falling debris in the Kyiv region.

Kyiv, which had been relatively spared from attacks since the beginning of the year, faced frequent nightly aerial raids in May.

SOUTH KOREA REGRETS COURT'S REFUSAL OF WARTIME LABOR VICTIMS DEPOSIT

SOUTH KOREA REGRETS COURT'S REFUSAL OF WARTIME LABOR VICTIMS DEPOSIT

@Jackie San

South Korea's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday expressed regret about a district court's decision not to begin a process of depositing money for one of the plaintiffs who won lawsuits over wartime labor during Japan's colonial rule and have refused to receive compensation from a government-backed fund.

The ministry announced Monday that it has applied to district courts to deposit money for four plaintiffs who won against two Japanese firms at South Korea's Supreme Court in 2018. Out of a total of 15 plaintiffs, 11 have agreed to accept the money from the government-backed fund, and the remainder have maintained their stance not to accept it.

South Korea's Gwangju District Court said on Tuesday that it decided not to start the deposit process for one of the four plaintiffs, who submitted a document rejecting the fund's money being placed in the court's custody, according to Yonhap News Agency.

In responding to the court's decision, the ministry voiced "deep regret" in a statement and vowed to initiate an objection procedure while seeking a fair and accurate court judgment.

Civic groups supporting the victims protested the ministry's announcement Monday, calling it "legally wrong and politically unfair," while demanding Japan's apology and direct compensation from the Japanese companies.

South Korea has said the government-backed fund will pay compensation to the surviving victims and the bereaved who sued the Japanese companies, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd and Nippon Steel Corp, over forced labor during World War II, instead of requiring them to do so as ordered by the Supreme Court rulings.

SECOND FRENCH ARREST WARRANT ISSUED FOR FORMER NISSAN CHIEF GHOSN

SECOND FRENCH ARREST WARRANT ISSUED FOR FORMER NISSAN CHIEF GHOSN

@Jackie San

French investigators issued a second international arrest warrant for former Renault-Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn in April, a source close to the case told AFP Tuesday.

The warrant was issued by a Paris investigating magistrate when Ghosn did not appear to be charged last year on counts including corruption.

Ghosn currently lives in Lebanon, where he fled after a dramatic 2019 escape from Japanese custody accomplished in part by hiding in an audio-equipment box.

The former CEO "cannot leave Lebanon, as Lebanese authorities have forbidden him to leave because of the Japanese prosecution. He therefore cannot respond to the summons to be charged in France," his lawyers Leon Del Forno and Martin Reynaud told AFP.

A previous warrant dating to April 2022, from investigators in Paris suburb Nanterre, already targeted him over abuse of company funds and money laundering, in connection with contracts issued by a Renault-Nissan subsidiary while he was in charge.

This year's warrant could be the last step in a separate probe opened in 2019 for corruption, bribery of an agent for an international public organization, influence peddling, abuse of company funds and receiving stolen goods.

Ghosn may yet face a criminal trial on those charges, which relate to 900,000 euros ($980,000) sent to Paris politician and former minister Rachida Dati by Renault-Nissan's Dutch subsidiary.

The cash was supposedly to pay for Dati's work as a lawyer in 2010-12, a time when she was also serving as a European Parliament lawmaker.

She has been under investigation since July 2021 for corruption and influence peddling while serving as an elected official.

Investigators want to find out whether Dati in fact did any legal work for Renault-Nissan or the relationship was in fact a concealed form of lobbying at the European Parliament, which MEPs are barred from doing.

"Carlos Ghosn's being brought into the case will allow the truth to emerge," Dati's lawyers Olivier Baratelli and Olivier Pardo told AFP.

They said they would ask for Dati, currently mayor of Paris' seventh district, and Ghosn to be questioned jointly.

AT 330 METERS JAPAN'S TALLEST SKYSCRAPER COMPELETED IN TOKYO

" FUKISHIMA WATER RELEASE SHOULD AVOID SWIMMING SEASON: KOMEITO HEAD "

The head of Komeito, the junior coalition partner of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, said the government should not start the release into the sea of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant during the swimming season amid concerns over the safety of the plan.

Natsuo Yamaguchi made the comment at a time when the government is stepping up efforts to dispel or ease fears from neighboring countries and local fishermen that the water could pose a risk to the marine environment, food safety and human health.

The government and the plant's operator Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc aim to begin releasing the water "around the summer."

"It is preferable to avoid the imminent swimming season," Yamaguchi told reporters in Fukushima. "We want the government not to rush to explain everything so as not to cause bad rumors."

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi is scheduled to visit Japan from Tuesday with the agency's safety review findings on the country's plan to discharge the water from the crippled plant, which was devastated by a natural disaster in 2011.

The government hopes the IAEA's safety assessment will help ease worries about the plan.

PAKISTAN BILLIONAIRE'S SON, SULEMAN, CARRIED RUBIK'S CUBE ON THE TITANIC SUBMERSIBLE: HERE'S WHY ?

@Jackie San

' A 19-year-old who died in the Titanic submersible accident took his Rubik's Cube to create a Guinness World Of Record, according to his mother. Suleman Dawood and his father were among five (5) passengers presumed dead in the OceanGate's Titan submersible last week. '

A 19-year-old teenager, Suleman Dawood, who lost his life in Titan submersible accident took his Rubik's Cube with him because he wanted to create a Guinness World Record, his mother said in an interview with BBC.

She said that her son has even applied to the Guinness World Records and his father had brought a camera to capture the moment. Dawood's father, Shahzada has also died in the submarine accident

In her first interview after the incident, Christine Dawood said, “I didn't comprehend at that moment what it meant - and then it just went downhill from there."

The victim's mother also stated that she had previously planned to go with her husband to view the wreck of the Titanic, however, the trip was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“But I stepped back because Suleman really wanted to go," she told BBC.

She further said that Suleman had immense love for the Rubik's Cube, he even used to carry it everywhere with him and solved the complex puzzle in just 12 seconds.

“He said, 'I'm going to solve the Rubik's Cube 3,700 metres below sea at the Titanic'," his mother told the British public service broadcaster.

Dawood recalled the moment when they hugged and cracked jokes before her husband and son boarded the Titan submersible. She expressed her happiness for Suleman and Shahzada as they boarded the Titanic. “They really wanted to do it for a very long time."

Speaking about her husband, Dawood described him as a person who has the ability of childlike excitement.

After waiting for over 96 hours, she lost hope and sent a message to her family. “I said: 'I'm preparing for the worst.' That's when I lost hope," she told BBC.

She further refused to discuss the ongoing investigations into the Titanic submarine tragedy

Suleman Dawood was among the five passengers presumed dead in a catastrophic implosion that is believed to have destroyed OceanGate’s Titan submersible last week. It was on its way to view the historic shipwreck in the Atlantic Ocean.

INCIDENT WITH KNIVES CAUSES COMMOTION ON TOKYO YAMANOTE LINE TRAIN

INCIDENT WITH KNIVES CAUSES COMMOTION ON TOKYO YAMANOTE LINE TRAIN

@Jackie San

An emergency call was made Sunday by a staff member at JR Shinjuku Station, a major train terminal in Japan, reporting that a man was "brandishing a knife" inside a train on Tokyo's busy Yamanote loop line, police said.

Two men, who were apparently injured in the commotion, were transported to the hospital, the Tokyo Fire Department said, with the police questioning a man in his 50s, believed to be of foreign nationality, to gather more details about the situation.

The man was seated with two knives of around 25 to 27 centimeters, wrapped in what appeared to be cloth, with part of the blades visible. The self-proclaimed chef said he had brought the two knives from his workplace to take them home, the police said.

No eyewitnesses saw a knife being swung.

According to East Japan Railway Co, operator of the Yamanote Line, the emergency alarm inside the train was pressed shortly before 4 p.m. and operations of the Yamanote, Chuo and Sobu local lines were temporarily suspended, affecting about 14,000 passengers.

TESPO SAYS EQUIPMENT TO RELEASE TREATED WASTEWATER INTO SEA IS COMPLETE - JAPAN

TESPO SAYS EQUIPMENT TO RELEASE TREATED WASTEWATER INTO SEA IS COMPLETE - JAPAN

@Jackie San

All equipment needed for the release into the sea of treated radioactive wastewater from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant has been completed and will be ready for a safety inspection by Japanese regulators this week, the plant operator said Monday, as opposition to the plan continues in and outside Japan over safety concerns.

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings said it installed the last piece of an undersea tunnel dug to release the water offshore, completing the construction of the necessary equipment that began last August.

A mandatory safety inspection of the equipment will begin Wednesday, said Nuclear Regulation Authority Chairman Shinichi Yamanaka, who visited the Fukushima Daiichi plant last week.

If everything goes well, TEPCO is expected to receive a safety permit for the release about a week after the inspection ends, officials said. Discharge of the treated water is expected to begin this summer, although the exact date has not been set.

The plan has faced fierce protests from local fishing groups concerned about safety and reputational damage. Nearby countries, including South Korea, China and some Pacific Island nations, have also raised safety concerns.

Government and utility officials say the wastewater, currently stored in about a thousand tanks at the plant, must be removed to prevent any accidental leak in case of an earthquake and to make room for the plant’s decommissioning. They say the treated but still slightly radioactive water will be diluted to safe levels and will be released gradually into the ocean over decades, making it harmless to people and marine life.

Some scientists say the impact of long-term, low-dose exposure to radionuclides is unknown and the release should be delayed. Others say the release plan is safe but call for more transparency, including allowing outside scientists to join in sampling and monitoring the release.

Japan has sought support from the International Atomic Energy Agency to gain credibility and ensure that safety measures meet international standards.

A massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, destroyed the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant’s cooling systems, causing three reactors to melt and their cooling water to be contaminated and leak continuously. The water is collected, treated and stored in the tanks, which will reach their capacity in early 2024.

ZUCKERBERG AND MUSK CALL OUT EACH OTHER FOR CAGE FIGHT !

ZUCKERBERG AND MUSK CALL OUT EACH OTHER FOR CAGE FIGHT !

@Jackie San

PARIS (June 22, 2023): Tech titans Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk are in a fierce business rivalry that has spilt over into a playground spat, with the two men offering to fight each other in a cage.

Months after Musk took over Twitter, Zuckerberg’s Meta hinted it was planning to launch its own text-based social media platform — essentially a direct rival.

Musk has trolled Zuckerberg ever since with messages on Twitter, telling his fans this week: “I’m up for a cage match if he is lol.”

Zuckerberg, who has followed the trend of tech bosses getting buff and posting martial arts videos, responded on Wednesday on his Instagram Stories with a screenshot of the message and a response: “Send me location.”

Meta confirmed to AFP that Zuckerberg’s message was genuine.

The exchange has provoked mirth on social media with plenty of fight predictions — Zuckerberg emerging as the clear favourite.

“Please god let this happen,” technology journalist Taylor Lorenz wrote on Twitter.

“The best Musk-Zuckerberg cage match is one in which two men enter and no men leave,” wrote podcaster Bennett Tomlin.

'SANE' TWITTER JIBE

The two men have baited each other for years with opposing views on everything from politics to artificial intelligence.

But their new business rivalry has supercharged the animosity.

Musk responded angrily to a recent claim by a Meta official that there was appetite for a “sanely run” Twitter alternative.

The Tesla and SpaceX boss bought the social media firm for $44 billion before sacking much of its staff and allowing banned right-wing conspiracy theorists back onto the platform — sending advertisers fleeing.

Musk defended his handling of Twitter at an event in Paris last week, saying advertisers had come back and he had eliminated almost all bots.

In an interview earlier this month with US podcaster Lex Fridman, Zuckerberg was asked to say something positive about Musk’s handling of Twitter.

After an eight-second pause for thought, he said Musk had “led a push early on to make Twitter a lot leaner”, a move he said was good for the industry.

Zuckerberg announced thousands of job cuts at his firm months after Musk did so at Twitter.
