DECARBONISATION HARDER FOR COMPANIES WAS MAKING ECONOMIC SLOWDOWN
DECARBONISATION HARDER FOR COMPANIES WAS MAKING ECONOMIC SLOWDOWN
LONDON – The global economic slowdown is starting to weigh on corporate efforts to achieve climate goals.
Some 40 per cent of heavy industrial companies worldwide say they are unable to invest further in decarbonisation due to the current environment, according to new research by consultant Accenture, which surveyed 1,000 executives. Almost two-thirds indicated their main efforts to cut carbon emissions will not be economically attractive before the end of the decade.
“If heavy industry fails to decarbonise, all others fail,” the researcher said.
The findings come as some governments have pulled back from plans to support renewable energy and low-carbon products amid high inflation and concerns about cost and energy security. Accenture’s research suggests that companies are also moving more slowly, at a time when severe weather events across the globe highlight the damaging effects of climate change.
In a separate report released Thursday, the consultant found that just 18 per cent of companies are on track to meet net-zero goals by mid-century. At the same time, 37 per cent have pledged to reach net-zero – up from 34 per cent in 2022 – it said, in an analysis of 2,000 of the world’s largest firms.
“It’s promising to see an increase in public commitments to net-zero targets again this year, but the adoption of key decarbonisation measures is not uniform, with some companies still unable to master the basics,” Mr Jean-Marc Ollagnier, Accenture’s chief executive officer for Europe, Middle East and Africa, said in a statement.
Europe fared better than other areas of the world, with 61 per cent of companies surveyed having net-zero targets, compared with 28 per cent in North America and 30 per cent globally. However, just 24 per cent of European companies were on track to actually reach net-zero by 2050.

SINGAPORE STAYS WITH ISRAEL'S AND AGREED WHAT HAPPENS IN GAZA HOSPITAL
SINGAPORE STAYS WITH ISRAEL'S AND AGREED WHAT HAPPENS IN GAZA HOSPITAL
SINGAPORE – Singapore “deeply regrets” the impact of Israel’s military operations on Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on Friday.
“We strongly urge Israel to do its utmost to protect all civilians and medical facilities in Gaza. We urge all parties to comply fully with international humanitarian law,” it said in a statement.
“Civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, should be protected.”
MFA also said that “Hamas should not use these premises for military purposes or use civilians as human shields”, and reiterated its call “for the immediate and safe release of civilian hostages in Gaza”.
On Wednesday, Israeli troops entered Al-Shifa, Gaza’s biggest hospital, following a days-long siege that has caused global alarm over the fate of the civilians trapped inside.
Reuters quoted a Gaza Health Ministry spokesman as saying that there was no water, food or baby milk in the hospital, which was packed with 650 patients and about 7,000 people displaced by weeks of Israeli air strikes and artillery bombardments.
MFA also said that Singapore remains deeply concerned about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Palestinian civilians have borne the brunt of Israel’s weeks-long military campaign in retaliation for an Oct 7 attack by Hamas that Israel says killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians. Israel also says that Hamas took more than 240 hostages.
Singapore welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2712, which calls for urgent and extended humanitarian pauses and corridors in Gaza. The resolution was adopted by the UN Security Council on Wednesday, with 12 members voting in favour, none against and three abstentions (Russia, Britain and the United States).
“Every effort must be made for the immediate, safe and unhindered provision of humanitarian aid to affected civilians throughout Gaza,” MFA added.
The Al-Shifa Hospital has become the main target of Israel’s ground operation, and the Israeli military has claimed that Hamas has its headquarters in tunnels beneath the facility, which the Palestinian militant group denies.
MFA said that Singapore will continue to work closely with its humanitarian partners to offer additional assistance and support to the Palestinian people.
The Gaza health authorities deemed reliable by the UN say that at least 11,500 people have been confirmed killed, more than 4,700 of them children, in the Israeli bombardment and ground invasion, reported Reuters.
Since the war began, more than two-thirds of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million have fled their homes. There have been limited deliveries of humanitarian relief crossing from Egypt into Gaza since Oct 21.

JAPAN FOREIGN MINISTER SAYS JAPAN TO 'TAKE LEAD' IN ADDRESSING GAZA CRISIS
JAPAN FOREIGN MINISTER SAYS JAPAN TO 'TAKE LEAD' IN ADDRESSING GAZA CRISIS
TOKYO
Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa said Friday that Japan will "take a lead" in the global efforts to address the deepening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip amid the escalating war between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Japan will proactively communicate with related nations toward the realization of a "two-state solution" for establishing an independent Palestine state alongside Israel to resolve their longstanding conflict, Kamikawa said in an interview with Kyodo News.
She underscored that Japan can hold dialogue with Israel, Palestine and Middle Eastern countries. "We will aim to improve the humanitarian situation and help deescalation in the short term, and approach them to realize a two-state solution in the long term."
Earlier this week, Kamikawa and her counterparts from the Group of Seven industrialized nations called for "humanitarian pauses" to enable civilians in Gaza to flee and facilitate the delivery of aid supplies to the Palestinian enclave.
With Japan set to co-chair the Global Refugee Forum in Geneva in mid-December, Kamikawa said Tokyo will encourage other nations to step up support for refugees as more Palestinian civilians are expected to be forced to leave their homes.
Kamikawa, who became Japan's first female foreign minister in around two decades in September, also said it is important for women to assume "leadership positions" and engage in war prevention, reconstruction and peace-building in Gaza.

WARY OF JOINT CHINA, RUSSIA BOMBER FLIGHTS NEAR JAPAN - KISHIDA PM JAPAN
WARY OF JOINT CHINA, RUSSIA BOMBER FLIGHTS NEAR JAPAN - KISHIDA PM JAPAN
TOKYO
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida expressed wariness Saturday about recent joint Chinese and Russian bomber flights over waters near Japan, warning that his country is facing the toughest and most complex security environment in postwar times.
"Attempts to change the status quo unilaterally around our country are intensifying," Kishida said in a speech at the Air Self-Defense Force's Iruma Air Base in Saitama Prefecture near Tokyo, adding a "swift" deployment of long-range missiles to boost defense is needed.
In the latest occurrence in June, four Chinese and Russian bombers jointly flew above waters near Japan, prompting the ASDF to scramble fighter jets. Japanese fighters also responded to passing bombers in November last year.
Although Japan's airspace has not been violated, the Defense Ministry conveyed its grave concerns to China and Russia via diplomatic channels, seeing the action as a show of force.
Kishida also noted Japan's decision to update its key defense documents last year and acquire "counterstrike" capabilities, or the ability to hit enemy bases should the need arise. The move is a major policy shift under Japan's war-renouncing Constitution.
The prime minister vowed to secure the necessary funding to build up the country's defenses amid security challenges, including North Korea's missile and nuclear threats.

PBB BLIND - PROTESTS HELD AROUND THE WORLD IN SOLIDARITY WITH PALESTINIANS BUT STILL NO ACTION TO ISRAEL
PBB BLIND - PROTESTS HELD AROUND THE WORLD IN SOLIDARITY WITH PALESTINIANS BUT STILL NO ACTION TO ISRAEL
LONDON/PARIS/ISTANBUL: Across the world, demonstrators have rallied in solidarity with Palestinians on Saturday, calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Anadolu Agency reported that a huge crowd gathered in London's Hyde Park, protesting Israel and those governments that have yet to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, where the death toll has climbed to over 11,000 people.
Carrying Palestinian flags and signs, thousands of people after gathering at Hyde Park marched towards the United States Embassy while chanting pro-Palestine slogans.
Palestinian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Husam Zomlot, Former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, Labour MP John McDonnell as well as representatives of leading NGOs and unions also attended the National March for Palestine.
In Paris, several thousand demonstrated Saturday to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
Protesters began from the Place de la Republique and marched to the Place de la Nation.
Demonstrators wore Keffiyehs, the black and white scarf symbol of the Palestinian cause, and held Palestinian flags and slogans demanded an "immediate ceasefire", "free Palestine", "Macron complicit" and "Palestine will live and win."
President Emmanuel Macron told the BBC Friday that Israel must stop bombing Gaza and killing civilians, considering that there is "no legitimacy" for the bombing.
It may be a turning point in French politics towards the war in Gaza that was applauded by French citizens and political figures.
"Macron finally uttered the word 'ceasefire' but France must speak with a stronger voice, especially in the UN Security Council in which it is a permanent member," said Mathilde Panot, an MP for La France Insoumise (LFI).
Several rallies also took place in different cities in Morocco and Tunisia in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza who are experiencing a bloody Israeli onslaught.
In Marrakech in northern Morocco, a rally was organised by the pro-Palestine Moroccan Initiative for Support where speakers affirmed their support to the Palestinian people.
A rally in Casablanca demanded pressure on the US and other Western pro-Israel powers to stop backing the Israeli onslaught against Gaza.
Meanwhile, hundreds in Tunisia participated in a rally in Tunis to protest Israeli attacks on Gaza. The demonstration was organised by the Tunisian opposition main bloc, the National Salvation Front.
Israel has launched relentless air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip – including hospitals, residences, and houses of worship – since Oct 7.
At least 11,078 Palestinians have been killed, including 4,506 children and 3,027 women.

ISRAELI ARMY SHOOTS WHOEVER TRIES TO LEAVE AL-SHIFA HOSPITAL - PALESTINE
ISRAELI ARMY SHOOTS WHOEVER TRIES TO LEAVE AL-SHIFA HOSPITAL - PALESTINE
GAZA: A doctor at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City reported on Saturday that the Israeli army opened fire on individuals attempting to flee the hospital.
The Israeli army has surrounded the hospital area and they are "not even a metre away, they are at the door," Fadia Malhis, a gynecologist at the hospital, told an Anadolu Agency correspondent in frequently interrupted phone conversations.
"They shoot anyone who wants to go out of the hospital. If anyone moves between units, they shoot them. There are many martyrs in the yard in front of the emergency room, the situation is very bad and dangerous, it is indescribable," she said.
"It is like a prison without water, electricity, or food. There were more than 100 martyrs in the garden. They opened fire at those who tried to bury the martyrs in the hospital yard. The hospital garden is full of martyrs. Some tried to escape from the hospital, and they also killed them. They fired at me too," she added.
Citing a power outage in the hospital and underlining the deteriorating condition of infants in the incubators in the intensive care unit, she said: "There are 60 babies in the intensive care unit, 39 of them are intubated, one baby died in the afternoon. These (infants) will die one after the other."
She called for immediate action to cease hostilities around the hospital, saying: "Please, save us, stop this war, otherwise we will die. There are dead people everywhere. Save us, the situation is very bad."

JAPAN HOSPITAL DENIEST LGBT WOMAN SUPPORT FOR IVF PREGNANCY - TOKYO
JAPAN HOSPITAL DENIEST LGBT WOMAN SUPPORT FOR IVF PREGNANCY - TOKYO
TOKYO
An LGBT advocacy group urged the Japanese government on Tuesday to ensure all pregnant women have access to the same level of medical support after a woman in a same-sex relationship who became pregnant through in-vitro fertilization was denied treatment at a hospital.
In the request presented to the Children and Families Agency, the Tokyo-based organization Kodomap also highlighted another case in which a hospital refused to give a checkup to an unmarried pregnant woman who planned to raise the child on her own.
The cases occurred at a time when Japanese hospitals have grown wary about accepting pregnant women unconditionally due to a lack of legislation related to conception via donated sperm.
Japan requires women to be in a heterosexual marriage to access IVF, leading some in same-sex relationships to travel overseas to receive the treatment.
Kodomap called on the government to ensure that "all women, regardless of their marital status or how they became pregnant, can receive appropriate obstetrics treatment."
Koji Takahashi, a senior official at the agency who received the request, echoed that view, saying, "Regardless of how she got pregnant, there should not be a case where an obstetrics department refuses to examine a pregnant woman."
Takahashi added the government would soon send notices to hospitals instructing them to avoid a repeat of the situation.
In the case of the woman in the same-sex relationship who conceived overseas via IVF, the hospital conducted an ethics committee assessment to determine what action to take.
The committee decided that, as it is an unprecedented situation, the institution should refuse to allow the woman to access its services.
In the other case, the unmarried woman was told by the hospital she may no longer receive pregnancy checkups because she lacked sufficient documentation from the clinic where she underwent in-vitro fertilization using donated sperm.
Satoko Nagamura, a representative of Kodomap, said such cases occur because some medical workers are prejudiced or lack understanding of LGBT couples who wish to have children through IVF.
"It is unacceptable that hospitals deny examinations just because the woman is from a sexual minority or has used a donated sperm," said Nagamura.

NEW ISLAND EMERGES AFTER UNDERWATER VOLCANO ERUPTION SOUTH OF TOKYO JAPAN
NEW ISLAND EMERGES AFTER UNDERWATER VOLCANO ERUPTION SOUTH OF TOKYO JAPAN
TOKYO
A small new island has emerged near Iwoto Island, about 1,200 kilometers south of Tokyo, following underwater volcanic eruptions occurring since late last month, according to a Japanese researcher.
Fukashi Maeno, associate professor at the University of Tokyo's Earthquake Research Institute, said he confirmed phreatomagmatic eruptions took place about 1 km off Iwoto Island in the Pacific and a rocky island with a diameter of around 100 meters as he flew over the site on Oct 30.
Plumes rose every several minutes during the eruptions, which resulted from magma and seawater interacting, and possibly reached heights of more than 50 meters, occasionally spewing rocks with diameters of several meters, Maeno said.
Pumice stones were spotted floating in waters around the new island, and nearby seawater changed color as a result of the volcanic activity, Maeno said.
Iwoto Island, previously known as Iwojima, is part of the Ogasawara Islands.
According to the Japanese Meteorological Agency, eruptions have also taken place in the area between July and December 2022, as well as June this year. The agency said it believes the latest eruptions began on Oct 21.
The eruptions "show the resumption of magmatic activity. The new island is expected to grow larger if the eruptions continue, but the outlook remains uncertain," Maeno said.
