THINGS TO DO IN HAT YAI (SONGKHLA) THAILAND AND WHAT YOU NEET TO VISIT

Hat Yai, a city in Thailand's far south near the Malaysian border, is a sprawling commercial hub and shopping destination.

@Jackie San

Hat Yai (Thaiหาดใหญ่pronounced [hàːt jàj]) is a district (amphoe) of Songkhla province, southern Thailand.

GEOGRAPHY

Neighboring districts are (from the west clockwise): Khuan Kalong of Satun provinceRattaphumBang KlamKhuan NiangSinghanakhonMueang SongkhlaNa MomChanaSadao, and Khlong Hoi Khong.

The northeastern part of the district is on the shore of the Songkhla Lake.

ADMINISTRATION

The district is divided into 13 sub-districts (tambons), which are further subdivided into 98 villages (mubans). The city (thesaban nakhonHat Yai covers tambon Hat Yai. There are four towns (thesaban mueang): Ban Phru covers parts of tambon Ban Phru, and Khlong HaeKhuan Lang and Kho Hong each cover tambons of the same names. There is further one township (thesaban tambon). Pha Tong covers parts of tambon Pha Tong. The non-municipal areas are administered by nine tambon administrative organizations (TAO).

WHY WE NEED TO VISIT HAT YAI THAILAND

An often-missed Thai destination, Hat Yai is inexpensive, full of great dining and shopping, top beaches and a waterfall. Here’s what to do in Hat Yai.

The vast majority of Hat Yai’s tourists gravitate toward its night markets and street foods that sprawl all over the country’s southern pearl. However, explore beyond the hustle and bustle of this metropolis in southern Thailand and you’re in a different domain, a land of idyllic beaches and a massive seven-story-high waterfall.

There is something that sets Hat Yai apart from others (like Bangkok), but it’s truly something that cannot be explained, only felt.

HAT YAI IS THE CHEAPER VERSION OF BANGKOK ( AND LESS FRENETIC )

Despite being a tourist hub for neighboring countries like Malaysia and Singapore, Hat Yai prices are considerably lower than in Bangkok. From accommodation and transportation to food, your wallet will say yes to everything. In fact, I managed to spend only $200 during my three days here.

You can eat pad thai for as low as 25 baht (80 cents U.S.) in Hat Yai, whereas in Bangkok prices start at an inflated 70 baht ($2.22 U.S.) and go up to 212 baht ($6.70 U.S.) if you want huge shrimp.

Some useful travel tips for your perfect trip to Hat Yai:

HAT YAI IS UNEXPLORED BY WESTERN TRAVELERS

In contrast to Phuket, Hat Yai has a stark difference, and that is the type of travelers.

Being under the radar and a secret of its own, this southern gem shies away from the rest of the world. It builds its tourism mainly upon Malaysian and Singaporean tourists and that’s about it. It is a mystery as to why Hat Yai has been left untouched.

In Penang, I was hanging out by the shisha lounge, planning our next destination with a woman from the U.K., when I mentioned Hat Yai. She looked a little bemused and asked, “Is this even real?”

HAT YAI IS A SHOPPER'S PARADISE

@Jackie San

There is an abundance of opportunities to splurge your money on unique, local food and dessert in Hat YaiKim Yong Market is one to look forward to where you can put your bargaining skills to good use.

Exotic fruits, towers of dried chiles, smokey grills and the city’s rickshaws line up along the roadside starting at 6 a.m.

With three night markets within easy walking distance, you will think that having two hands are never enough. The two-story madness at Asean Night Market, open-air shopping at Greenway Night Market and the largest and newest mall in southern Thailand, Central Festival, attract all kinds of travelers. It’s hard to resist.

HAT YAI IS A GASTRONOMY HAVEN

@Jackie San

Eating in Hat Yai can be both a joyous and chaotic affair. Forks are forsaken in favor of fingers and food is indulged with unparalleled gusto.

Pulling up a stool on a random street or settling down at a posh restaurant, hungry travelers will never be bored by the wide array of Asian cuisines. And did I mention it is cheap?

After a few rounds of mango sticky rice (10 baht, about 40 cents U.S.) and coconut ice cream (40 baht, about $1.30 U.S.), a foot massage is the icing on the cake.

GREENWAY NIGHT MARKET

@Jackie San

Hat Yai’s largest food haven is the Greenway Night Market, which is divided into 26 zones. Plenty of stalls are selling all sorts of snacks and finger foods like takoyaki, coconut jelly and sexy ice-blended drinks.

Immerse yourself in an authentic taste of local life with Hat Yai’s very own enchanting floating market.

KHLONG HAE FLOATING MARKET

@Jackie San

Khlong Hae Floating Market tailors a unique experience. Like Bangkok’s floating market, you can wander along the canal side and its buzzing bazaars to soak up the atmosphere of this vibrant area. The markets are only open on weekends, the earlier the better.

For Muslim visitors, Hat Yai gastronomy caters to Muslim tourists, especially from Malaysia, so expect to see vendors with straw hats over their hijabs.

STRIKING NATURE IN TON NGA CHANG

@Jackie San

Exchange the bustling and big-city charms of Hat Yai for the natural beauty of Ton Nga Chang, Hat Yai’s seven-stories-high waterfall. Hidden away in the dense jungle of a wildlife sanctuary, Ton Nga Chang Waterfall has seven tiers for all kinds of visitors.

The jungle vista from the second tier is stunning and there’s even more from the seventh tier, a beautiful verdant vision of the huge primeval forest.

Plastic bottles are not allowed on the trail so it is best to bring your own bottle and get it refilled at one of the food stalls nearby. Do wear sturdy sports shoes for climbing up the steep slopes to the upper tiers.

Besides waterfalls, Hat Yai doesn't shy away from the beach and the ocean.

SAMILA BEACH

@Jackie San

With its long stretch of sand and famous mermaid statue, Samila Beach deserves more recognition. It isn’t as pretty as the beaches in Trang, Hat Yai’s hidden competitor in the south, but this underrated beach still manages to snag some of the best scenery of the Gulf of Thailand.

KHAO KAO SAEN

@Jackie San

A five-minute drive from the beach will unveil a hidden gem in Hat Yai, where only locals visit. Khao Kao Saen has been developed with the help of the Tourism Authority of Thailand for its scenic landscape and ideal location.

With massive, jaunty rocks to climb on and the vast ocean as the highlight, you are spoiled for choices to photograph. This gem was built upon a royal decree with a temple at the back. And,  it’s open to the public for free.

TSUNAMI 2024 FLOODED 190 HECTARES AFTER JAPAN QUAKE - GOVERNMENT SAYS

TSUNAMI 2024 FLOODED 190 HECTARES AFTER JAPAN QUAKE - GOVERNMENT SAYS

@Jackie San

Tsunami waves generated by the powerful earthquake that jolted the Noto Peninsula and its vicinity in central Japan on New Year's Day swept across some 190 hectares of land in three municipalities, the government said Monday.

The death toll from the quake disaster climbed to 222 as of Monday afternoon, two weeks after the magnitude-7.6 temblor, according to the Ishikawa prefectural government.

The tsunami inflicted damage mostly in the northeastern part of the peninsula, including Suzu and Noto on the Sea of Japan coast, wrecking houses and port facilities, though the full extent of the destruction is yet to be assessed.

The 190 hectares also include areas of the coastal town of Shika in the central part of the prefecture, according to the central government.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told a press conference that breakwaters were damaged at least in seven beaches hit by tsunami waves.

The extent of inundation was determined based on images taken by the helicopters of the land ministry and the prefectural government, as well as map information from the country's Geospatial Information Authority.

A team of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers, which conducted an on-site survey, has found signs of tsunami waves reaching as high as 4 meters in multiple locations.

With lifeline utilities still to recover in the Noto region, the government of disaster-hit Wajima said more than half of the 401 students of all three junior high schools run by the city in Ishikawa's north will be relocated to prefectural facilities in the southern city of Hakusan on Wednesday to ensure a better educational environment.

THREE FOREIGN-BORN RESIDENTS SUE OVER RACIAL PROFILING BY JAPANESE POLICE - JAPAN

THREE FOREIGN-BORN RESIDENTS SUE OVER RACIAL PROFILING BY JAPANESE POLICE - JAPAN

@Jackie San

Racial profiling by police is an "everyday occurrence" in Japan, one of three foreign-born residents who sued the government over the issue on Monday said.

In the first lawsuit of its kind, the three men accused the police of having repeatedly questioned them because of their ethnicity or appearance.

They are each seeking 3.3 million yen in compensation.

"A lot of apathy here has allowed people like me to be abused and mistreated," one of the plaintiffs, an African American in his 40s who gave his name as Maurice S, told reporters.

"This is an everyday occurrence," he said. "We have to do something to prevent that for the future generations."

Despite rising immigration, foreign-born residents account for only 2.3 percent of Japan's population, one of the lowest shares in the OECD.

Maurice, who lives with family members who are Japanese citizens, said he has been questioned 16 or 17 times by police during his decade in Japan.

Officers "know that they can waste my time", he said.

Japan's National Police Agency (NPA) could not immediately comment on the case.

Another of the plaintiffs, a Pacific islander in his 50s called Matthew who is a permanent resident of Japan, has been questioned about 100 times, according to his lawyers.

Matthew said these experiences had caused him to withdraw socially.

"Every time I finish work, I'm hiding in my house... because I don't want to face another police (encounter)," he said outside the Tokyo District Court.

The third plaintiff, a man born in Pakistan who has been a Japanese citizen since the age of 13, said he has been questioned more than a dozen times, including once in front of his house.

Although lawsuits have been filed in the past about excessive questioning by police, this is the first one regarding racial profiling during questioning, lawyers for the three men said.

In 2021, the NPA spotted "six inappropriate cases of police questioning even though officers had no intention of discrimination based on race or nationality," a senior agency official told parliament in 2022.

The NPA continues to educate officers to respect human rights, the official said at the time.

The 55-year-old man, believed to be an American, was restrained by crew members before his arrest by Tokyo police at the airport on suspicion of causing injury to the cabin attendant.

The incident occurred Tuesday night as Flight 118 was over the Pacific.

The man has denied the allegation and was quoted by the police as saying he does not remember what happened as he had taken a sleeping pill.

CHONG CALLS FOR GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION TO DEAL WITH DIESEL SHORTAGE IN SARAWAK

CHONG CALLS FOR GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION TO DEAL WITH DIESEL SHORTAGE IN SARAWAK

@Jackie San

KUCHING (DECEMBER 25, 2023): The government needs to intervene to address the current shortage of diesel in Sarawak, says state Democratic Action Party chairman Chong Chieng Jen.

He said there has been a shortage of diesel in Sarawak for about two weeks now, and that one of the reasons for this is the designated quota of the subsidised fuel for each state.

“A notable challenge arises from the misuse of subsidised diesel for non-industrial purposes by some parties, leading to an imbalance in the supply and demand equation.

“Although the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) determines the diesel quota for each state, it is important that the Sarawak government ensure that the allocated quota meets the region’s demand.

“In addition to monitoring the quota, the Sarawak government should implement effective enforcement measures to prevent the misuse of subsidised diesel and ensure an adequate supply for industrial and business purposes,” he told reporters when met at the Petronas Sungai Maong station, here yesterday.

Adding on, the Stampin MP said his recent visits to petrol stations confirmed the severity of the shortage, impacting not only individual consumers but also logistic operations in Sarawak.

The shortage, he pointed out, has become particularly challenging for lorry and truck drivers who face difficulties in obtaining diesel, leading to disruptions in their operations.

“The situation has forced those in need of diesel to search from one petrol station to another, highlighting the strain on logistical activities in the region,” he said, and stressed the urgency of resolving the diesel shortage before it further impacts Sarawakian businesses and the overall economy.

“With the supply expected to normalise after the new year, prompt action and efficient measures are crucial to mitigating the adverse effects on various sectors in Sarawak,” he added.

Earlier, Chong through his Stampin parliamentary service centre organised a petrol subsidy programme for motorcyclists at the Petronas Sungai Maong station and the Mile 8 Jalan Penrissen station.

The programme saw a total of 400 motorcyclists at the two stations receive RM5 worth of petrol and a complimentary RM15 Sugarbun voucher, each.
