Police in Seki, Gifu Prefecture, have arrested a 22-year-old woman on suspicion of abandoning the corpse of her newborn daughter in a car where she died in February.

According to police, Momoka Yamaguchi, a company employee, gave birth to a baby girl in the bathroom of a relative's house between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Feb 16, NHK reported. She left the infant in her car where she died at around 3 a.m. the next day. Yamaguchi’s mother called police after her daughter told her about the baby.

Police said an autopsy showed the cause of death to be respiratory failure.

Police said Yamaguchi, who was arrested on Friday, told them the child’s father was a man she had previously been in a relationship with, and she found out she was pregnant after they broke up.

Yamaguchi's mother was quoted by NHK as saying that none of the family knew she was pregnant. Yamaguchi lived with her parents and five siblings, and had not complained of any changes in her health such as morning sickness. She continued to work as usual.

Police said Yamaguchi told them that after giving birth, she put the baby in her car and wanted to take him to a hospital, but didn't know where to go.
