SLOW TROPICAL STORM DUMPS HEAVY RAIN AROUND TOKYO AFTER CAUSING FLOODS IN SOUTHERN JAPAN - TOKYO

SLOW TROPICAL STORM DUMPS HEAVY RAIN AROUND TOKYO AFTER CAUSING FLOODS IN SOUTHERN JAPAN - TOKYO

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

A slow-moving tropical storm had a far-reaching impact in much of Japan on Friday, dumping heavy rain around Tokyo and flooding roads and riverside areas in the south.

Flooding was reported in a number of areas in Kanagawa Prefecture, west of Tokyo, where floodwater blocked roads, stalling vehicles and traffic. Warnings for heavy rain and potential landslides included the densely populated capital, Kanagawa and nearby Shizuoka Prefecture.

Muddy water flowed down the Meguro River in one of Tokyo's popular cherry blossom viewing spots, the water significantly swollen from its usual levels, NHK television footage showed.

In Hiratsuka, dozens of cars in a parking lot sat in water just below their windows. A pedestrian waded through floodwater as high as his thighs. In another Kanagawa town, Ninomiya, floodwater from a river stalled vehicles on a street and broken tree branches were stuck on a bridge over the swollen water.

Tropical Storm Shanshan made landfall Thursday morning on the southern main island of Kyushu as a powerful typhoon. It has steadily weakened but not moved much and remained just off Kyushu's northeastern coast Friday morning. The slow pace increases the amount and duration of the rainfall and risks of disaster, experts say.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said Shanshan was heading east toward the Shikoku and Honshu main islands with 72 kph winds but a forward speed of just 10 kph.

JMA forecast up to 30 centimeters of rainfall in Shikoku and central Japan, and up to 15 centimeters for Tokyo and nearby prefectures in the next 24 hours through Saturday noon.

The storm has paralyzed traffic, delivery services and businesses across southwestern Japan.

About 110 people have been injured in the Kyushu region, the majority of them in the hardest-hit two southern prefectures of Miyazaki and Kagoshima. Two people were missing. Before the typhoon made landfall, it caused a landslide that killed three people.

Hundreds of domestic flights connecting southwestern cities were canceled, and Shinkansen bullet trains were suspended between Tokyo and Osaka on Friday. Postal and delivery services were mostly suspended in southwestern regions of Kyushu and Shikoku, and supermarkets and other stores were closed in the region. Automakers including Toyota Motor Corp and Mazda Motor Corp closed down their factories in the affected regions through Friday.

TYPHOON MAY HIT JAPAN WEDNESDAY (AUGUST 28, 2024); SHINKASEN DISRIPTIONS EXPECTED - TOKYO JAPAN

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

A strong typhoon is on course to approach western and eastern Japan on Wednesday or later, the weather agency said, possibly causing widespread disruption to shinkansen bullet train services.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said Sunday that Typhoon Shanshan, currently located south of the Japanese archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, is moving northwest at 30 kilometers per hour.

As the season's 10th typhoon edges closer, the agency warned of lightning, tornados, strong gusts and hail in areas in western and eastern Japan as well as the southwestern Nansei island chain as early as Sunday.

Bullet train services on the Tokaido Shinkansen line, which runs between Tokyo and Osaka, might be suspended on the entire route or on certain sections for two days from Wednesday, depending on the course and strength of the typhoon, the operator said.

Operations on the Joetsu, Hokuriku, Tohoku, Yamagata, Akita shinkansen lines may also be partially or fully canceled around Wednesday and Thursday, while the Sanyo Shinkansen line could face similar disruptions for three days from Tuesday, the operators said.

When Typhoon Ampil passed close to eastern Japan on Aug. 16, services on the Tokaido shinkansen line between Tokyo and Nagoya were canceled for the whole day, while about 650 international and domestic flights to and from Tokyo's Haneda airport and Narita airport, east of the capital, were canceled.

JAPAN HEALTH AUTHORITIES SAY 123 PEOPLE DIED IN TOKYO FROM HEATSTROKE IN JULY 2024 - JAPAN

JAPAN HEALTH AUTHORITIES SAY 123 PEOPLE DIED IN TOKYO FROM HEATSTROKE IN JULY 2024 - JAPAN

@Jackie San

More than 120 people died of heatstroke in the Tokyo metropolitan area in July, when the nation's average temperature hit record highs and heat warnings were in effect much of the month, Japanese authorities said Tuesday.

According to the Tokyo Medical Examiner's Office, many of the 123 people who died were elderly. All but two were found dead indoors, and most were not using air conditioners despite having them installed.

Japanese health authorities and weather forecasters repeatedly advised people to stay indoors, consume ample liquids to avoid dehydration and use air conditioning, because elderly people often think that air conditioning is not good for one's health and tend to avoid using it.

It was the largest number of heatstroke deaths in Tokyo's 23 metropolitan districts in July since 127 deaths were recorded during a 2018 heatwave, the medical examiner's office said.

More than 37,000 people were treated at hospitals for heatstroke across Japan from July 1 to July 28, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.

The average temperature in July was 2.16 degrees Celsius (3.89 degrees Fahrenheit) higher than the average over the past 30 years, making it the hottest July since the Japan Meteorological Agency began keeping records in 1898.

On Tuesday, heatstroke warnings were in place in much of Tokyo and western Japan. The temperature rose to about 34 C (93 F) in downtown Tokyo, where many people carried parasols or handheld fans.

“I feel every year the hot period is getting longer,” said Hidehiro Takano from Kyoto. “I have the aircon on all the time, including while I’m sleeping. I try not to go outside.”

Maxime Picavet, a French tourist, showed a portable fan he bought in Tokyo. “It works very, very well,” he said. “With this temperature, it's a necessity."

The meteorological agency predicted more heat in August, with temperatures of 35 C (95 F) or higher.

“Please pay attention to temperature forecasts and heatstroke alerts and take adequate precautions to prevent heatstroke,” it said in a statement.

JAPAN CONSIDERS MONITORING METADATA FOR PRE-EMPTIVE CYBERATTACK DEFENSES - TOKYO JAPAN

JAPAN CONSIDERS MONITORING METADATA FOR PRE-EMPTIVE CYBERATTACK DEFENSES - TOKYO JAPAN

@Jackie San

The Japanese government is considering allowing the peacetime monitoring of private metadata in a way that does not directly identify individuals, in a bid to bolster its pre-emptive cyberattack defenses, government sources said Sunday.

Data such as messages themselves, in principle, will not be subject to monitoring, amid concerns that the plans to strengthen surveillance against potential cyberattacks could infringe on privacy, the sources said.

Japan's Constitution forbids the violation of the secrecy of any means of communication.

Instead, the government would allow, during normal times, surveillance of changes to information such as amounts of metadata -- accompanying data such as a message's size or the date it was sent -- and IP addresses that identify devices on networks.

The sources said the government has judged that limiting the target information to metadata would be within the scope of the law.

Cyberattacks are often staged via multiple devices, making it useful to regularly monitor changes in data traffic and times information is sent.

The government aims to submit a bill during an extraordinary parliament session in the fall at the earliest to boost the country's "active cyber defense," in which signs of cyberattacks are observed and detected, and if necessary, enable preventative measures such as disrupting enemy servers with computer viruses.

The government is also considering creating a framework to allow it to obtain metadata held by the country's communications firms.

Collection and management of the metadata is planned to be centered at a new organization to be devised by the government's National Center of Incident Readiness and Strategy for Cybersecurity.

SARAWAK SEIZES CROWN IN HISTRORIC, RECORD-BREAKING TRIUMPH WITH 76 GOLDS - SUKMA 2024

SARAWAK SEIZES CROWN IN HISTRORIC, RECORD-BREAKING TRIUMPH WITH 76 GOLDS - SUKMA 2024

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

KUCHING, SARAWAK AUGUST 24, 2024 (SATURDAY) : Sarawak has made history at the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2024, storming to victory as overall champion with awe-inspiring haul of 76 Golds, 55 Silvers, and 70 Bronzes, shattering five national records and smashed their target of 70 Golds, marking a glorious end to the biennial games today.

In a nail-biting finish, Federal Territory trailed closely behind with 75 Golds, 65 Silvers, and 72 Bronzes, while Selangor secured third place with 56 Golds, 64 Silvers, and 61 Bronzes.

Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah was ecstatic as he confirmed the thrilling outcome.

" I am overjoyed that Sarawak has captured the overall championship after 30 long years (1994). It was a nail-biting finish, with us fighting to the very last medal-just one ahead of Federal Territory to clinch the top spot.

" I want to extend my heartfelt thanks and congratulations to everyone involved in this victory, especially for ensuring the smooth organisation of events across all venues," he told DayakDaily when contacted today.

Sarawak's final surge was nothing short of heroic. Wong Ling Ching dazzled in badminton, clinching Gold in the women's individual event. On the waters, the sailing team struck Gold twice- Nurul Shazwanie Mohd Saad and Nur Asma Syahrizan dominated the women's International 420, while Muhammad Amirul Aqmal Aslan and Syahharoul Aiman Rozaiman triumphed in the men's International 420.

Cassandra Lavigne Shelden delivered Sarawak's 76th Gold after nailing the artistic floor gymnastics event with a score of 12.233.

This victory represents a meteoric rise for Sarawak, who finished fourth just two years ago at SUKMA 2022 in Kuala Lumpur with 32 Golds, 43 Silvers, and 52 Bronze medals. Now, Sarawak has surged to the top, reaffirming its status as a sporting powerhouse.

In this SUKMA, Sarawak dominated Taekwondo, claiming 11 Gold medals, and put on a masterclass in diving by sweeping nine out of 12 Golds.

The contingents also conquered six other events, taking the crown in Muay Thail (5 Golds), Petanque (5 Golds), Tenpin Bowling (5 Golds), Golf ( 2 Golds), Squash (2 Golds), and Sailing (2 Golds).

Additionally, athletics brought home five Golds, as did Pencak Silat. Boxing added four more, with Wushu contributing three, Archery, Fencing, Badminton, Gymnastics, Artistic Gymnastics, Judo, Karate, and Volleyball each chipped in with Golds, showcasing the depth and breadth of Sarawak's talent.

And it was not just about the medals - Sarawakian athletes set even broke five national records. Ng Jin Xuan hurled the javelin 45.12 metres, obliterating the old record of 44.98 metres set by fellow Sarawakian Ho Sin Hui at the 2008 in Terengganu.

Swimmer Hii Puong Wei rewrote the record books in the men's 200 - metre backstroke with a blazing time of 2:06:59.

Jonah Chang Rigan, the 'Ironman' of Sarawak, launched the shot put 17.66 metres, smashing the previous SUKMA record of 17.31 metres.

In acrhery, Liew Yu Jie and Joey Tan Xing Lei raised the bar in the 70 - metre recurve events, scoring 334 and 325 points, respectively, leaving the old records far behind.

This victory marked Sarawak's fourth time as overall champions, adding 2024 to their titles from 1990, 1992, and 1994.

SUKMA Sarawak 2024 will go down in history as the largest and most thrilling edition yet, with 37 sports and 488 events. The impact of this epic event is set to reverberate across Malaysia, inspiring the next generation of athletes and elevating the nation's sporting prowess to new heights.

BEAR TAKES BAG OF RICE FROM FRONT DOOR OF HOME IN IWATE PREFECTURE - IWATE JAPAN

@Jackie San

A bag of rice left inside the front door of a house in Oshu, Iwate Prefecture, was apparently stolen by a bear, police said Saturday.

Police said claw marks on the front door indicate that a bear gained entry by opening the door while the resident was asleep between 9 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday, broadcaster NTV reported. The resident noticed the damage to the door when he woke up in the morning and called the police.

The bag was taken out into the garden and the rice removed.

Police have urged citizens in the area to be vigilant against bears.

A VIRTUAL REALITY TOURS SHOW HIROSHIMA A-BOMB REALITY AS SURVIVORS AGE - HIROSHIMA JAPAN

A VIRTUAL REALITY TOURS SHOW HIROSHIMA A-BOMB REALITY AS SURVIVORS AGE - HIROSHIMA JAPAN

@Jackie San

As fewer survivors remain to tell their stories of the devastation wrought by the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan at the end of World War II, a younger generation has been turning to new technologies to convey something of the survivors' lived realities, determined that they should not be lost.

In the western Japanese city of Hiroshima, hit by a U.S. atomic bomb on Aug 6, 1945, a travel company has been operating a unique tour utilizing virtual reality headsets to provide visitors with an immersive window into the past.

The 80-minute tour by Tabimachi-Gate Hiroshima Co., available in English as well as Japanese, takes visitors around key areas in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park near the hypocenter of the bomb.

The images begin with the city before the bomb was dropped, and, after showing its immediate impact, present glimpses through the decades leading to the city's current state.

"As the number of atomic bomb survivors dwindles, I think it is our generation's duty to be aware of the reality of the bombings and to make an effort to pass it down," said Momoka Masushige, who is responsible for the VR tour at the company.

"To be able to 'experience' the moment the bomb was dropped provides a vastly different experience from looking at pictures and documents," she said.

Nearly 80 years on since the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the closing days of World War II, Japan may soon be about enter an era without the voices of the survivors known as hibakusha and their passionate advocacy of nuclear abolition. Their population, which peaked at over 372,000, had fallen to 106,825 as of the end of March, with their average age exceeding 85, government data shows.

Even smaller is the number of those who speak publicly about their experiences. In Hiroshima, their total stood at just 32 in April, according to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, making how to pass down their stories an increasingly pressing issue.

Tabimachi-Gate Hiroshima first operated the so-called peace tours in the summer of 2020 and introduced virtual reality headsets the following year.

It uses images created based on the lived experiences of Eizo Nomura, who was the only survivor of the bombing inside a building that features in the tour just 170 meters from ground-zero, as well as photographs and material that documented the blast. Forty-seven at the time, he died in 1982.

The images have been updated since the tour's launch based on feedback from survivors, some of whom said the reality was even worse than that portrayed. They now show the burned-out remnants of the city under a blood-red sky and specks of ash, as well as survivors with their blast injuries and the dead.

But the company is keen to distance itself from the label of "dark tourism," which focuses on visits to places of death or tragedy, saying the tour also underscores a message of peace.

"We focused not just on the immediate effects of the atomic bomb but also on how the city has steadily built itself back up over the years," Masushige said.

A version that omits people from the landscape is available for students, as well as for adults who would like to opt out of the more visceral imagery.

Following the tour, participants gather at the Rest House, a former kimono store where Nomura survived, to reflect upon what they learned. One wall is covered with their post-it notes that wish for peace in multiple languages.

Some of those are from hibakusha themselves who have taken the tour. "A bright future for the children," one says.

"It's not something you can experience every day, so we hope it provides an opportunity to think deeply about peace," Masushige said.

The reservation-based tours cost 3,500 yen ($24) per adult and 1,000 yen for a child between the ages of 6 and 11. The agency holds about 100 headsets with 20 guides.

NFL IS MOVING CLOSER TO REPLACING THE CHAIN GANG WITH NEW TECHNOLOGY TO MEASURE LINE TO GAIN - NEW YORK CITY

NFL IS MOVING CLOSER TO REPLACING THE CHAIN GANG WITH NEW TECHNOLOGY TO MEASURE LINE TO GAIN - NEW YORK CITY

@Jackie San

The NFL is moving closer to replacing the chain gang with new technology to measure line to gain.

NFL executive Gary Brantley told The Associated Press the league will test Sony’s Hawk-Eye technology during some preseason games. The system most likely wouldn’t be ready for full implementation until next season, though it could happen sooner.

“We’re in the installation phase for all of our stadiums, really getting them calibrated and up to date,” said Brantley, the NFL’s senior vice president and chief information officer. “We’re just really getting to a place where this system is as accurate as possible and really calibrating across our multiple stadiums. ... We have multiple stadiums with multiple dimensions inside of those stadiums with different age. So we’re really just going through the installation of putting in the infrastructure and making sure these cameras are installed.”

Sony, which was named the NFL’s official technology partner on Wednesday, has expanded its sports technology through Hawk-Eye Innovations to support officiating and the development of on-field and sideline technologies, including a new coach’s sideline headset that will debut in 2025.

Its Hawk-Eye tracking services for line-to-gain measurement adds cameras to stadiums to track players, officials and the ball. The optimal tracking system notifies officials instantly if a first down was gained after the ball is spotted by hand.

“We’re reducing a significant amount of time, 40 seconds for each time of use that basically is making the game that much more impactful,” said Neal Manowitz, Sony president and chief operations officer. “And then also the system is accurate down to less than half an inch, which is incredibly, incredibly accurate. Hopefully the fans appreciate the objective view, or at least half the fans each play will be appreciating it.”

The NFL has long used two bright orange sticks and a chain to measure for first downs. That method would remain in a backup capacity.

Beyond new technology for line-to-gain measurement and new headsets for coaches’ communication, Sony is partnering with the NFL to enhance sideline photography, broadcast cameras and production, and more.

“The NFL has incredibly high standards and really what we’re talking about in this relationship is together, at the highest level, how do we change the future of sports,” Manowitz said. “How we change line to gain is a great example, and that’s where. ... we get the creators of the game, all of the people of the ops team, the coaches, the players, how do we get that community as close as possible to our engineers, and how do we bring them and then ultimately provide a much better experience for fans.”
