UNIVERSITY TO SET UP NEW "DINOSAUR DEPARTMENT" AS POPULARITY GROWS IN OKAYAMA JAPAN

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

A university in western Japan will establish a department specializing in dinosaur studies beginning next April as the field grows in popularity.

The Okayama University of Science already offers a course on dinosaurs, but plans to increase the number of lectures, opportunities for field work, and professors with the new department, as well as widening research to include areas such as biosciences in addition to geology and paleontology.

"We aim to make it a new educational and research hub in western Japan for studying dinosaurs, and hope to use our strength as a comprehensive science university to advance research," said Mototaka Saneyoshi, an associate professor studying dinosaurs at the university.

The university's Department of Biosphere-Geosphere Science established a course on dinosaurs and paleontology in 2014, taking over a fossil dig project in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia being conducted by a local biotech company.

It has since discovered one of the world's largest dinosaur footprints and developed new age-determination methods.

The university decided to upgrade the course as the number of people applying in recent years has increased to around two to three times the number of places available.

The new department will have places for 45 students, around a 50 percent increase from the original course, as well as eight professors, up from four.

The department will offer opportunities to engage in multifaceted research on dinosaurs, from identifying proteins left within fossils to decoding the sequencing of amino acids, as well as learn about pathological analysis.

The dig in the Gobi Desert is the current course's selling point, with fourth-year undergraduate and graduate students working on theses making up the majority of participants thus far. But third-year undergraduates will also be able to join under the new department.

"We hope to discover new aspects of dinosaur ecology that we would not have been able to discover under the previous course," Saneyoshi said.

60 PERCENT OF JAPAN'S PREFECTURES HAVE NO NETWORK FOR DIALYSIS IN EMERGENCY - TOKYO JAPAN

60 PERCENT OF JAPAN'S PREFECTURES HAVE NO NETWORK FOR DIALYSIS IN EMERGENCY - TOKYO JAPAN

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

More than 60 percent of Japan's 47 prefectures said they had not established plans to work with neighboring prefectures for dialysis patients in the event of a large-scale disaster, a recent survey by Kyodo News found.

The results, underscoring the disparity in preparations, came after a weeklong advisory was issued last month over a potential megaquake in the Nankai Trough, which runs along the Pacific coast. Concerns abound that local dialysis facilities would not be able to fulfill demand if an emergency were to strike.

Among the 30 prefectures that had no plans, Nara Prefecture said it had "exchanged contact details with the people in charge of dialysis treatments in neighboring prefectures," while Osaka acknowledged the need to consider a plan.

Fukui Prefecture said that while it did not regularly coordinate with its neighbors, it had a history of working with others, including accepting dialysis patients who were affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake on New Year's Day this year.

The survey, conducted between May and June, also found that among the 15 prefectures that have prepared measures, Kochi has a manual to support dialysis patients and has set up a system to provide continued health care during an emergency. Kochi is expected to be hit hard in case of a Nankai Trough earthquake.

The Kanto region centering on Tokyo has established a network of eight prefectures, including Niigata, Ibaraki and Tochigi, which hold an annual meeting and drill to exchange information.

"It is crucial to work broadly with other prefectures in order to secure dialysis treatments during a disaster," said an official from Saitama Prefecture near Tokyo.

Around 350,000 people in Japan require dialysis treatment, which is usually carried out three times a week and requires a large quantity of water.

A research group under the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in 2023 formed a series of recommendations outlining the need for municipalities to compile individual manuals and to establish networks with neighboring prefectures.

"There is a risk that the initial response will be delayed because they don't know where to turn. It's critical for municipalities to publicize their manuals and prepare with a range of facilities," said Toshihiko Yamaka, secretariat head of the Japan Hemodialysis Assistance Team.

JAPAN PLEDGES 3 MIL DOSES OF MPOX VACCINE TO WHO - GENEVA

JAPAN PLEDGES 3 MIL DOSES OF MPOX VACCINE TO WHO - GENEVA

Jr_Paku Midin Channel

Japan has pledged some 3 million doses of an mpox vaccine as part of a global effort to combat the recent surge of the infectious disease across Africa, according to the World Health Organization.

Japan's offer is "the largest donation to date" alongside contributions from the European Union, the United States and other countries in a promised total of more than 3.6 million doses, the Geneva-based body said Friday.

The move came after WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared last month that the alarming rise in mpox cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring countries constitutes a public health emergency of international concern, a designation previously used for COVID-19.

"Vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics are crucial for bringing mpox outbreaks under control. We urge countries with available supplies to come forward to help save lives and prevent further infections," he said in a statement.

The doses offered by Japan will be the LC16 vaccine, developed by KM Biologics Co in Kumamoto. The WHO also recommends mpox immunizations such as the MVA-BN vaccine by Bavarian Nordic A/S of Denmark.

A recent WHO report said some 5,700 cases, including 32 deaths, have been reported in the republic and 14 other African countries this year. One case has also been reported in Sweden and another in Thailand since August.

CHANGES PARALYMPIAN LIVES IN DRAMATIC WAYS BY JAPANESE PROSTHETICS MAKER

CHANGES PARALYMPIAN LIVES IN DRAMATIC WAYS BY JAPANESE PROSTHETICS MAKER

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

Few can take credit for changing lives in the dramatic ways prosthetist Fumio Usui has.

Some call him a pioneer, responsible for introducing sports prosthetics to Japan and later platforming several Paralympians who have gone on to achieve extraordinary things.

With the Paris Paralympics bringing a fresh surge of inclusive energy to the French capital, Usui said several prominent Japanese para athletes have put their trust in his equipment to deliver at the games, including badminton bronze medalist Daisuke Fujihara and runner Sae Tsuji.

The Tokyo-based prosthetist said his first real exposure to amputees and disability issues was when his teacher in elementary school had his leg amputated.

He recalled his late 20s, when he was unemployed and visited what was then Japan's largest prosthetic manufacturer, which primarily made artificial limbs for rail accident victims.

"As luck would have it, they had a job vacancy," Usui, now 69, said, adding that at the time, no formal qualifications were required to get into the industry.

Having always had an interest in helping people, Usui joined the organization, which is now called the Tetsudo Kousaikai Foundation's Prosthetics and Orthotics Support Center in Tokyo's Arakawa Ward.

He has not looked back since, and says the reason why he does his work has not changed.

"It's because it makes people happy," Usui said. "Especially kids."

When children with limb deficiencies try on prosthetics, "they become limitless in terms of muscle prowess, communication skills, and confidence," he said.

Usui first learned of sports prosthetics when he saw athletes from countries like the United States and Australia use them at the Paralympics, and grew eager to bring the technology to Japan.

Around the same time, more pliable carbon prostheses began appearing on the market, replacing traditional wooden models.

He ended up developing the first sports prostheses worn by Japanese Paralympic athletes at the Sydney Games in 2000, a sporting event he also attended.

Usui has developed a reputation as the go-to guy for prosthetics in Japan, sought out by past, present and aspiring Paralympians.

Shino Kawai, 32, is one of them. Although she did not qualify for the Paris Games, she has already set her sights on Los Angeles in 2028.

Despite being born with both legs, Kawai's left one was not functional. She was forced to use a wheelchair and eventually developed a tumor, leaving her no choice but to have the limb amputated.

She had dedicated herself to wheelchair fencing and aimed to represent Japan in Paris, but decided to take up badminton with an eye on the 2028 games after failing to qualify, alongside having recently had her amputation.

"It was hard because I trained for around six years to get to Paris...but I am still pleased with my work," she said. "I want to see how far I can push myself," she said, adding that she sought out Usui's prosthetics for precisely this reason.

People who have benefitted from Usui's skills can be found throughout Japan, particularly on Wednesday evenings on the running track at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

Even on humid summer nights when breaking a sweat comes easy, the group, made up of people who run just for fun as well as Paralympic hopefuls, can be often seen practicing their sprints alongside other non-disabled athletes.

"This group is for diehards," Usui said, adding that he has a much bigger event once a month called Startline Tokyo that people travel from all over Japan to attend.

Atsuko Matsuura, 30, who has competed in para sports at a national level and attended a recent Wednesday evening session, was there to make adjustments to her prosthetic leg to find her groove.

"I can only thank him," Matsuura said of Usui, who invited her to the event shortly after her leg was amputated due to a tumor. "He showed me a future," she said.

"I'm just doing this because I like it and I can move my body, while lately, I've also been trying to surpass my own personal record," she said.

Usui's work has also caught the attention of other entrepreneurs in Japan, like Ken Endo, bioengineer and CEO of Xiborg Inc., a firm that developed highly advanced prostheses for both daily and sports use.

"(Usui's) a very big buy in prosthetics in Japan," Endo said.

"Xiborg started in 2014," Endo said, "and focuses on developing technology for professional athletes from a biomechanics perspective...while we also utilize that same technology to create prostheses for everyday life."

Two of Xiborg's main products are called the "Blade for the One" and "Blade for All," the former being for serious sports competitors, and the other for use in daily life.

Xiborg, like Usui, has also sent its technology to Paris, with Endo saying that U.S. track athlete and multiple Paralympic medalist Blake Leeper brought the equipment to compete in the French capital.

Meanwhile, back at the support center in Arakawa Ward, Usui says that although he is of retirement age, he is "still kicking."

"They said I can keep working for a little longer, but we are also training younger specialists," he said, conceding that age may be finally starting to catch up with him. "But of course, I want to keep doing this forever."

OFFERING FREE PASSPORT TO 18-YEAR-OLDS IN JAPAN

JAPAN TRAVEL INDUSTRY CALLS FOR OFFERING FREE PASSPORT TO 18-YEAR-OLDS

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

The Japanese government should offer free passports to 18-year-olds who have legally become adults to motivate more young people to travel abroad, the head of a travel industry group said in a recent interview with Kyodo News.

Citing that just around 17 percent of Japanese citizens had a passport as of 2023, Hiroyuki Takahashi, chairman of the Japan Association of Travel Agents, expressed concern that "opportunities for youth to travel abroad have been greatly reduced."

"This is problematic when we think about the development of people with a global mindset," said Takahashi, who also serves as chairman of major travel agency JTB Corp.

Overseas travel from Japan has struggled to return to pre-COVID pandemic levels due to a weak yen and a surge in travel costs, he said, adding that he plans to propose the passport distribution idea to the central government, targeting those who have come of age.

According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, the number of Japanese nationals who traveled abroad between January and July 2024 stood at 6.85 million, down 38.9 percent compared with the same period in 2019 before the coronavirus pandemic.

Takahashi said he believes gifting new adults a five-year passport will encourage overseas travel, while providing passports to children upon finishing junior high school is another option, as it could "raise the number of senior high schools conducting overseas school trips."

While inbound tourism to Japan has boomed, foreign airline companies will not be incentivized to "start new routes to Japan without a certain level of outgoing travelers," Takahashi said.

In order to meet the Japanese government's goal of 60 million inbound tourists in 2030, an increase in international flights to and from Japan is also needed, which can be attained by lifting the number of outbound travelers to at least 30 million in the same year, he noted.

Overseas trips will be pitched at a tourism expo to be held between Sept 26 and 29 at a major convention center in Tokyo, which the Japan Association of Travel Agents is organizing with others.

"We need to bring the number of outbound Japanese travelers to over 2 million people, or the same level as 2019," by 2025, Takahashi said.

FIRST GOLD MALAYSIA IN PARIS 2024, LIEK HOU SECURES MALAYSIA'S MAIDEN - PARALYMPIC PARIS

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

"He beat Indonesia’s Suryo Nugroh in straight games to retain his position as a Paralympic badminton gold medallist in the men’s singles SU5 event."

PETALING JAYA:

Malaysia won its first gold medal at the 2024 Paralympics when eight-time world champion Cheah Liek Hou defended his gold medal in the SU5 (physical impairment) men’s singles para-badminton final yesterday.

The 36-year-old secured a commanding 21-13, 21-15 victory over Indonesia’s Suryo Nugroh in just 41 minutes at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena.

After the first game, Suryo attempted a comeback but fell when chasing a point at 13-15. He received treatment and then continued the match but with more caution.

Cheah’s victory brought him a second consecutive Paralympic gold medal, having previously claimed the top spot in Tokyo in 2020.

Debutant Fareez Anuar failed to win a bronze against Indonesia’s Dheva Anrimusthi despite winning the first game 21-17.

Fareez could not maintain his momentum and lost the next two games 19-21, 12-21.

SAGO SYMPOSIUM FOCUSES ON SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION HELD FROM SEPTEMBER 23 - 25, 2024

SAGO SYMPOSIUM FOCUSES ON SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION HELD FROM SEPTEMBER 23 - 25, 2024

@Jr_Paku Midin Channel

KOTA SAMARAHAN (SEPTEMBER 24, 2024): The sustainable production of sago palms will be discussed extensively during the ongoing 15th International Sago Symposium, according to Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

When met at the sidelines of the ice-breaking session for delegates attending the symposium at Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute (Tropi) last night, Sagah said the symposium discourse is also set to highlight the immense contributions of the sago plant to food security and environment.

“It will also provide information to all planters on peat soil on how to manage the environment. Therefore, not only these would be beneficial to people, but they will also help in contributing to the maintenance of green ecology,” he added.

Sagah said the sago palm requires research to shorten its gestation period to boost sago production for food sources, adding that sago starch is currently being utilised for industrial purposes.

“The sago palm, known as the ‘tree of life’, is not only a source of food for many communities but also a symbol of resilience and hope in our efforts to address critical challenges such as food security and environmental sustainability.”

He said research outcome aimed at increasing the number of sago palm harvests would benefit food industry sustainability.

He mentioned that sago production issues had been raised in the previous State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sittings, and that Craun Research Sdn Bhd had been tasked with conducting thorough research.

“Craun had discovered how to make sago starch an alternative to rice, particularly its carbohydrate component. But still, the sago palm gestation period is long, making harvesting frequency and production low.”

Sagah expressed confidence that symposium would lead to meaningful collaboration and innovative solutions, unlocking the full potential of the sago palm to transform lives, landscapes, and ecosystems.

This year’s symposium, themed “Unlocking the Potential of the Sago Palm: Towards Sustainable Food Systems and Environmental Restoration”, is organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Universiti Teknologi Mara, SSPS of Japan, Nagoya University, Land Custody and Development Authority Holdings Sdn Bhd, Craun, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, and i-CATS University College.

The event, held from Sept 23 to 25, is also supported by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, Japan International Cooperation Agency, and Sarawak Convention Bureau.

Also present during the ice-breaking session for the symposium’s 250 international delegates was Sarawak Tropi director Datu Dr Lulie Melling.
