KUCHING (SEPTEMBER 21,2024): The Sarawak government has approved RM1.083 billion to replace and upgrade 2,743 kilometres of piping systems statewide, said Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi.

He said the project is funded entirely by the state and will be implemented over a span of five years.

“This year alone, we were allocated RM247 million out of the RM1.083 billion. This shows the seriousness of the Sarawak government in replacing and upgrading all of our piping systems statewide.

“Of course, this is not an overnight solution. As I mentioned earlier, we have a longterm masterplan and grid system in place.

“We face challenges such as pipe leakages here and there, probably due to ageing pipes (30-40 years old), and also due to third parties who can damage our pipes while they are doing their work on-site.

“While we don’t place any blame, these are among the challenges that we are facing on the ground right now,” he said during his speech at the 2023 Excellent Service Awards (APC) ceremony for his ministry at a hotel here on Friday night.

He said the Sarawak government, through his ministry alongside various departments and water agencies, is fully committed to solving the state’s water issues.

He added the goal is to ensure all areas in Sarawak have access to treated water by 2030, in line with the state’s development targets.

“It is crucial for all parties to understand the heavy responsibilities we are shouldering. At times, there may be scheduled shutdowns to carry out necessary maintenance work. If we don’t shut down the system, how can we complete our work?

“Similarly, if there are leakages, shutdowns are needed to carry out repairs. Some may criticise the lack of notifications but the reality is that leaks can happen at any time without warning. If we knew in advance, it wouldn’t be considered unscheduled,” he explained.

Julaihi urged the public to understand his ministry’s efforts as well as the departments and agencies under its purview in addressing the critical water supply issues in Sarawak.

“We are fully aware of the importance of this service to the people of Sarawak.

“Rest assured we are not sleeping on it. We are doing our best to achieve what has been set and targetted by the government. We are working as a team, giving our best to implement whatever has been planned by the Sarawak government through the ministry and all departments and agencies.

“I can assure you we will continue to work with strong teamwork to achieve success in the near future,” he said.
