KUCHING BIDS TO HOST 17TH UNESCO CREATIVE CITIES FORUM IN YEAR 2026 - MAYOR

KUCHING (SEPTEMBER 29, 2024): Kuching will bid to host the 17th Unesco Creative Cities Forum in 2026, said Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

He said this marks the first time Kuching has expressed its intention to host the forum since joining the Unesco Creative Cities Network in 2021.

“We look forward to submitting our proposal before end of the year and will deliberate whether Kuching will be the host for the 17th Unesco Creative Cities Forum,” he said during his Facebook live session ‘Shall WEE Talk’ yesterday.

Wee highlighted that the Unesco Creative Cities Forum 2024, which he attended earlier, attracted participation from 350 cities across the globe.

Given this, he believes that the local tourism industry will receive a significant boost if Kuching is selected to host the forum.

According to Wee, the issues to be discussed during the Unesco Creative Cities Forum include music, literature, handicraft and art, which are mostly creativity-related.

With over 300 participating cities, he said forum attendees will be able to learn from their counterparts worldwide to seek further advancement.

“More importantly, the number of participating cities is on the rise as year goes by,” he added.

The mayor hopes that hosting the Unesco Creative Cities Forum will attract more people from around the world to learn about Kuching and Sarawak.

Prior to attending the Unesco Creative Cities Forum 2024, Wee said he attended the Unicef Child Friendly Cities Conference held in Jinan, China.

He said he took the opportunity to visit the schools and public parks in Jinan to gain insights into designing child-friendly facilities.

He said he also attended a Smart Cities Forum to acquire the know-how on addressing the challenges of building of a smart city.
