KUCHING SARAWAK (JANUARY 02, 2025): Kuching South City Council (MBKS) today officially launched its body camera (bodycam) initiative for enforcement officers, marking a significant step towards enhancing public safety and operational transparency.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian expressed hope that all 24 local councils across Sarawak would adopt similar technology, as MBKS is the first council in the state to formally roll out the initiative.

While noting that 16 local councils in the state have already started using bodycams, the systems and equipment they use differ from those adopted by MBKS.

“MBKS’s launch today serves as an example for others to follow, showcasing the benefits of this initiative. This initiative has been in preparation for a year, involving careful planning and budget allocation.

“This programme represents a critical step in Kuching South’s progression toward becoming a Smart City. MBKS has deployed 10 body cameras for its enforcement officers, aiming to enhance public safety, improve accountability, and foster community trust.

“At present, 16 councils have implemented body cameras, while the remaining eight are in the process of acquiring the equipment.

“Although each council might use different system with each council currently tailoring its approach to its specific needs, standardising the system across all councils remains a future goal,” Dr Sim told a press conference after the launching ceremony today.

The Public Health, Housing, and Local Government minister highlighted the advantages of the bodycam initiative which include transparency and accountability through impartial records of interactions, to help build public trust and reduce complaints.

He also explained that bodycams help protect officers against false claims and serve as valuable tools for reviewing incidents.

“Furthermore, the technology encourages respectful interactions, reduces the use of force, and provides crucial legal evidence, streamlining investigations and operational efficiency,” he said.

Addressing privacy concerns, Dr Sim reassured the public that the cameras are designed to protect both residents and enforcement officers by providing clear, objective accounts of incidents.

He also pointed out that the initiative aligns with Sarawak’s broader vision of digital transformation and Smart City development.

Noting that 60-70 per cent of Kuching’s traffic lights are already “smart”, he also expressed confidence in the state’s commitment to integrating technology into urban management.

“Being a Smart City involves more than just technology; it is about using innovative tools to create a safer, more sustainable, and people-centered urban environment.

“The body camera initiative is a step toward building a better Kuching for all,” he said.

Also present during the press conference were Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng and other officials from MBKS.
