MIXED REACTIONS IN TELANG USAN OVER SUMBANGAN KEPERLUAN ASAS SARAWAK (SKAS') CASHLESS DISBURSEMENT

MIRI, SARAWAK (JANUARY 04, 2025): There has been a mixed reaction from the rural community in Telang Usan regarding the Sumbangan Keperluan Asas Sarawak (SKAS) or Sarawak Basic Needs Contribution welfare initiative.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau said his service team has been receiving several enquiries on the SKAS assistance and is collecting the constituents’ feedback on the issue.

While lauding the state government’s initiative in alleviating the financial burden of the targeted groups, Dennis, however, shared some of the complaints that he had received from residents about the assistance being channelled via the e-wallet application.

“Such a cashless payment system is not widely used by the residents in Telang Usan,” he pointed out.

“Hopefully with a much improved internet connection there, I hope it will ease the process for the residents to download the SPay Global application, and that all genuinely eligible people will get this assistance,” he said.

Dennis anticipated more enquiries coming in since the aid eligibility checking tool was made available during the past few days by the District Office and Sarawak Communications Unit.

“As an elected representative, I will be the first person to be referred to and contacted by the constituents.

“I expect there will be (complaints). How many complaints, I don’t know. But I hope that with that good internet connection and the use of WhatsApp in the village areas, residents will be able to check their status through the online system,” he said.

Additionally, he deemed it most appropriate for the relevant government agencies to give a thorough briefing on the welfare initiative to all elected reps and grassroots leaders to enable them to provide the public with much detailed information.
