KOTA KINABALU, SABAH (JANUARY 02, 2025): Sabah and Macau should combine their strengths and complement resources to create a larger network for economic and trade connectivity between ASEAN, China and the world.

“Sabah serves as a gateway to ASEAN and Southeast Asia, while Macau acts as a global connector. If the two regions can strategically position themselves for cooperation, they will undoubtedly make significant contributions to global trade, industry chains, supply chains and regional stability,” president of the Sabah-China Chamber of Commerce (SCCC), Datuk Frankie Liew, stated in an interview after attending the event the 2024 Chinese Overseas Gathering in Macau and the second Forum on Overseas Chinese Supporting High-Quality Development of the Belt and Road Initiative recently.

He highlighted that the Chinese community plays an important role in various sectors across Sabah and its neighboring regions and countries, particularly in economic and trade fields, where they hold key resources and influence. This can guide Chinese and global investors in delving into Southeast Asia, a future safe haven for global capital and industrial chains.

“Chinese Malaysians, including those in Sabah, are well-equipped in terms of language and culture to connect seamlessly with China. We also have ample international experience and extensive networks to assist Chinese and overseas entrepreneurs in expanding their footprint in Southeast Asia,” he noted.

On December 28, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the 25th anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland, and the 56th anniversary of the Macau Overseas Chinese Association, the 2024 Chinese Overseas Gathering in Macau and the 2nd Forum on Overseas Chinese Supporting High-Quality Development of the Belt and Road Initiative were grandly held at the Macau Tower.

Among the attendees was Tan Sri Goh Runkim, President of Malaysia’s Belt and Road Committee, who remarked in his speech that as a leader of the overseas Chinese community, he aims to focus on two key efforts in the future:

1. Encouraging more overseas Chinese to leverage their strengths and utilize Macau’s international platform to align with and support national development strategies like the Belt and Road Initiative, thereby achieving mutual benefits and win-win outcomes.

2. Acting as a “civil diplomacy ambassador” to globally convey the voice of the overseas Chinese community, share the success story of “One Country, Two Systems” in Macau, and garner greater international understanding and support.

The event also included the 2nd Forum on Overseas Chinese Supporting High-Quality Development of the Belt and Road Initiative. Keynote speeches were delivered by Wu Zhiliang, Vice Chairman of the Cultural and Historical Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Chairman of the Macau Foundation’s Administrative Committee, on the topic “One Country, Two Systems and Its Successful Practice in Macau,” and Wang Yiwei, a senior professor at Renmin University of China, on “The Wisdom of Chinese Overseas and Building People-to-People Connectivity.”

The Overseas Chinese Youth High-Level Forum featured thematic sharing by various distinguished guests, including Wu Xuanhui, Executive Vice President and Deputy Secretary-General of the Cambodian Chinese Hong Kong and Macau Entrepreneurs Association; Nan Gengxu, Chairman of the Sino-African Cultural and Arts Exchange Association; Chen Weiye, Supervisor of the Chinese Benevolent General Association in Peru; Lai Guanghao, Chairman of the Macau Overseas Chinese Youth Association; and Zhang Bo, General Manager of the Commercial Ecosystem Services Group of Xiaohongshu.

Dignitaries in attendance included Macau SAR Chief Executive Ho Lat Seng, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Ho Hau Wah, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macau, Zheng Xincong, and Deputy Director of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, Cheng Xueyuan.
