SAKAI KNIVES A CUT ABOVE FOR FOREIGN VISITORS TO JAPAN - OSAKA JAPAN
SAKAI KNIVES A CUT ABOVE FOR FOREIGN VISITORS TO JAPAN - OSAKA JAPAN
OSAKA
The global popularity of blades forged in the western Japan city of Sakai is on the rise, with foreign tourists helping to boost sales of the city's native brand that is widely regarded as one of the country's top three traditional knives.
The Sakai Traditional Crafts Museum saw annual sales of its blades surpass 100 million yen for the first time in fiscal 2023 and expects another record this fiscal year, with foreign tourists from the United States, France and others making up half of the sales.
Sakai blades date back to Japan's Kofun period (from the third to seventh century), when blacksmiths gathered in the area to forge iron tools for tomb construction for the ruling class, according to the museum operated by the city.
One such ancient tomb is a keyhole-shaped mound administered by the Imperial Household Agency as the burial ground of Emperor Nintoku, now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The industry began to flourish in the late 16th century when tobacco was introduced to Japan by Portugal and spurred the development of high-quality tobacco knives, leading to the endorsement by the Tokugawa shogunate that lasted until 1868.
Unlike mass-produced blades, Sakai blades are handmade by artisans that specialize in forging, sharpening and handle-making, with each step performed separately.
Today, Sakai knives continue to be crafted using traditional techniques passed down through generations and are widely used by chefs in Japan, the museum said.
"Foreign tourists are not just buying products -- they are buying stories," said Eric Chevallier, 35, a coordinator for overseas sales at the Sakai City Industrial Promotion Center.
Chevallier, a French national, said he sometimes spends hours explaining details of the knives while visitors handle and familiarize themselves with the blades.
"By knowing the history and how blades to be purchased are made, (tourists) will be able to imagine their background when using them in their home countries," he said.
Foreign tourists are said to frequently buy dozens of knives to bring home as souvenirs for family and friends, with those featuring wave-like patterns on the blade particularly popular.
According to the city, the value of the museum's knife sales rose from 20 million yen in fiscal 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic to 80 million yen the following year, and 140 million yen in the most recent fiscal year.
"Our top priority is hospitality. We strive to carefully explain the background of each knife to every individual so they can use it for years to come," said the museum's director Misa Endo.

UNITED STATES FINDS LIVE BEETLES HIDDEN IN JAPANESE SNACKS (CRUNCHY SNACK)
- LOS ANGELES, U.S
LOS ANGELES
Dozens of giant beetles hidden inside a shipment of Japanese snacks were uncovered at a U.S. airport, customs officials said Wednesday.
The live creepy crawlies, which were up to five inches (13 centimeters) long, were concealed among potato chips, chocolate and other goodies at Los Angeles International Airport last month.
The 37 creatures were likely destined for collectors of exotic insects, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said, estimating they were worth around $1,500.
"They may look harmless but in reality, smuggled beetles pose a significant threat to our vital agriculture resources," said Cheryl Davies of the CBP in Los Angeles. "Beetles can become a serious pest by eating plants, leaves and roots and by laying eggs on tree bark which damages our forests."
The specimens, which included scarab beetles, stag beetles and darkling beetles, will likely find their way to local zoos that have permits for such creatures, the CBP said.
Alongside its traditional cuisine, Japan has in recent years nurtured a reputation for innovative snacks, which include KitKat chocolates flavored with cherry blossom or wasabi.
But while locusts, grasshoppers and crickets do find their way onto the Japanese dinner table, especially in rural areas, beetles are not commonly consumed.

HEAVY SONWFALL HITS SEA OF JAPAN COAST AREA (DISRUPTING TRAFFIC )- TOKYO JAPAN
TOKYO
Heavy snowfall continued Wednesday along the Sea of Japan coast as the season's strongest cold front disrupted rail services in central Japan and air traffic, with the weather agency warning of more snow toward the weekend.
All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines canceled some of their flights due to the bad weather, including those between Tokyo and Tottori Prefecture in western Japan and between Shimane Prefecture, also in western Japan, and the Oki Islands in the Sea of Japan.
In central Japan, some local train services through Ishikawa, Gifu and nearby prefectures were canceled, including an express train on JR West's Nanao Line that experienced a brake malfunction due to frost.
In Shirakawa, Gifu Prefecture, the amount of snowfall reached 129 centimeters in the 48 hours through 5 p.m., a record high, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Snow accumulated up to 50 cm in Toyama in the 12-hour period through 5 p.m., 48 cm in Shirakawa and 45 cm in Jyoetsu, Niigata Prefecture.
Kagoshima in southwestern Japan also saw 2 cm of snow over six hours.
Casualties have been reported amid the severe weather, including a man in his 50s who hit his head after falling from a forklift while clearing snow in Tonami, Toyama Prefecture.
In Yamaguchi Prefecture, western Japan, a 62-year-old woman died after an 18-meter tree fell on her while she was guiding vehicles for the removal of another tree that had touched a power cable. Police said the tree may have fallen due to snow-loosened ground.
The weather agency warns of extremely unstable atmospheric conditions as cold air of minus 39 C or lower moves into an area 5,000 meters above eastern to northern Japan, potentially forming cumulonimbus clouds in some parts of the country.
The weather agency warns that heavy snowfall is expected not only along the Sea of Japan coast but also on the Pacific side, where snow is rare.

NET POPULATION INFLUX INTO TOKYO RECOVERS TO PRE-PANDEMIC LEVEL - TOKYO JAPAN
TOKYO
Tokyo continued to be a magnet for people in 2024, with a net influx of around 80,000 nearing the pre-pandemic 2019 level and highlighting the longstanding population concentration in the capital, according to government data.
People moving into Tokyo outnumbered those leaving by 79,285 in 2024, up 11,000 from a year before. The net population influx was 82,982 in 2019, but the move slowed down in 2020 and 2021 amid the spread of teleworking and infection control measures.
"More young people are (now) moving to Tokyo for work and studies," the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said Friday as it announced its latest migration statistics.
While 40 among 47 prefectures in Japan had more people moving out than moving in, Tokyo saw 461,454 people moving in, up 7,321 from a year earlier, and 382,169 people leaving, down 3,679.
The net influx into the broader metropolitan area covering Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa and Saitama prefectures stood at 135,843.
The Osaka area, which covers the prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo and Nara, saw more people moving in than those leaving for the first time since comparable data became available in 2014.
The ministry also began releasing figures on the migration of Japanese nationals and foreigners, with 735,883 people moving into the country and 371,615 people moving out.
The central government has been encouraging people to move outside Tokyo as part of its regional revitalization policy, but progress in curbing overconcentration in the capital has been slow.
Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who considers regional revitalization a key priority, aims to draw up in the summer a basic plan on steps to be taken in the next 10 years.

LAUNCES NAVIGATION SATELLITE ON NEW FLAGSHIP ROCKET - JAPAN
TOKYO
Japan's space agency said on Sunday it successfully launched a navigation satellite on its new flagship H3 rocket as the country seeks to have a more precise location positioning system of its own.
The H3 rocket carrying the Michibiki 6 satellite lifted off from the Tanegashima Space Center on a southwestern Japanese island.
Everything went smoothly and the satellite successfully separated from the rocket as planned about 29 minutes after the liftoff, said Makoto Arita, H3 project manager for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA.
Officials said it is expected to reach its targeted geospatial orbit in about two weeks.
Japan currently has the quasi-zenith satellite system, or QZSS, with four satellites for a regional navigation system that first went into operation in 2018. The Michibiki 6 will be the fifth of its network.
Michibiki’s signals are used to supplement American GPS and will further improve positioning data for smartphones, car and maritime navigation and drones.
Japan plans to launch two more navigation satellites to have a seven-satellite system by March 2026 in order to have a more precise global positioning capability without relying on foreign services, including the U.S., according to the Japan Science and Technology Agency. By the late 2030s, Japan plans to have an 11-satellite network.
Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, noting the successful launch in a statement later Sunday, promised that his government will make further effort to “maximize” the use of the navigation satellite system so that more people can smoothly access positioning data.
Sunday's launch, delayed by a day due to the weather, was the fourth consecutive successful flight for the H3 system after a shocking failed debut attempt last year when the rocket had to be destroyed with its payload.
Japan sees a stable, commercially competitive space transport capability as key to its space program and national security and has been developing two new flagship rockets as successors to the mainstay H2A series — the larger H3 with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and a much smaller Epsilon system with the aerospace unit of the heavy machinery maker IHI. It hopes to cater to diverse customer needs and improve its position in the growing satellite launch market.

RESIDENTS NEAR SAITAMA SINKHOLE URGED TO EVACUATE - TOKYO JAPAN
TOKYO
Five households in the immediate vicinity of a massive, ever-widening sinkhole in Yashio, Saitama Prefecture, were urged to evacuate Sunday, with efforts to rescue a man stuck inside reportedly halted.
A 74-year-old truck driver was swallowed Tuesday by the cavity which has since expanded to 40 meters across -- almost the length of an Olympic swimming pool.
The growing hole could be the result of corroded sewerage pipes, according to local authorities.
Requests were issued Sunday for five households near the sinkhole to take shelter, a local government official told AFP.
This is in addition to other residents within a 50-meter radius of the cavity who are also being encouraged to evacuate, he said.
On Saturday, Japanese rescuers completed building a 30-meter slope to send heavy equipment and reach the truck driver.
But a good amount of sewage water was discovered underneath the slope, which, combined with rain, led to the rescue mission being suspended Sunday, public broadcaster NHK said.
With the walls of the hole -- around 15 meters deep, according to NHK -- eroding, rescue workers are unable to stay inside it for long.
The hole was initially around five meters in diameter but combined with a larger cavity that opened during the rescue operation on Tuesday night.
Around 1.2 million people living nearby have so far been asked to cut back on showers and laundry to prevent leaking sewage from hindering the operation.

TWELVE TYPES OF GOODS FOR CHINESE NEW YEAR 2025 PRICE SCHEME - KOTA KINABALU, SABAH
TWELVE TYPES OF GOODS FOR CHINESE NEW YEAR 2025 PRICE SCHEME - KOTA KINABALU, SABAH
KOTA KINABALU (JAN 27, 2025): The 2025 Chinese New Year Festive Maximum Price Scheme (SHMMP) for Sabah has been in force since Thursday.
Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) Sabah director Shahril Nizam Shahidin said the price control scheme will last from January 25 to February 2, and 12 types of goods were gazetted for its implementation.
The list of goods is as follows: White pomfret fish; Large white shrimp; Onion (China); Imported round cabbage (Indonesia and China excluding Beijing cabbage); Red radish; Imported white radish; Imported potatoes (China); Imported old ginger; Chicken wings; Live pigs (farm only); Pork (belly) and Pork (meat and fat).
Shahril said this will be enforced through the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act (AKHAP) 2011 and will allow price determination to be made at the wholesale and retailer levels.
Price checks can be made via the KPDN website at https://www.kpdn.gov.my.
“This scheme is being enforced to stabilise the prices of goods throughout the Chinese New Year festival season and ensure the availability of supplies in the market.
“The implementation of this scheme is also part of the government’s thoughtful efforts to stabilise prices when demand is expected to increase to enable Malaysians of all races, religions and cultures to enjoy this scheme in a cheerful and harmonious environment,” he said during a walkabout to oversee the scheme implementation at e-Mart here today.
Shahril said KPDN Sabah had deployed 204 enforcement officers and 72 price monitoring officers at strategic locations throughout the state to monitor the availability of supply, compliance as well as inspections at public markets, farmers’ markets and shopping malls for festive goods.
“This approach allows enforcement to be implemented more effectively and immediate action can be taken against consumer complaints in the event of non-compliance,” he said.
Shahril said KPDN Sabah had inspected 4,617 premises since January 1 until 15 this year, which has resulted in 90 cases compounded of RM16,900 and an estimated seizure value of RM123,943.
“Strict action will be taken against any trader who fails to comply with the regulations under this scheme through the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011,” he said.
Those found guilty of selling price-controlled goods above the maximum price may be subject to penalties, including court fine up to RM100,000 or imprisonment up to three years or both or compounded up to RM50,000 for individuals, or fined up to RM500,000 or compounded up to RM250,000 for companies.
As for the offence of failing to display pink price tags for price-controlled goods, individuals may be fined by the court up to RM10,000 or compounded up to RM5,000, while companies can be fined up to RM20,000 or compounded up to RM10,000.
KPDN requests the public’s cooperation to report any complaints via the following channels: WhatsApp at 019-848 8000; KPDN e-Complaint Portal at http://eaduan.kpdn.gov.my; Call Centre via 1-800-886-800 and KPDN Ez ADU Smartphone Application.
Also present was Sabah branch of National Consumer Foundation chairman, David Chan.

The evacuees include residents from Kampung Dagang Tatau, Kampung Baru Tatau, Kampung Seberang, and landslide victims from Rumah Cherurai.
The SMK Tatau hall PPS officially opened on Jan 29.
The centre is now one of two operational PPS in the area, with the first being PPS Rumah Steven, which was opened on Jan 23.
Heavy rain at night on Jan 28 and 29 caused water levels in Batang Anap and Kakus River to rise, exacerbating the flood situation.
