A RAIN CONTINUES TO POUR, NUMBER OF SARAWAK'S FLOOD EVACUES COULD BREACH 10,000 - KUCHING SARAWAK, MALAYSIA
KUCHING (Jan 31,2025): The number of flood evacuees in Sarawak is expected to breach the 10,000-mark, judging from the rainy conditions across the state.
According to the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), the number of flood evacuees this morning stood at 9,790 from 2,767 families statewide.
Yesterday, there were 7,503 flood evacuees from 2,096 families.
The number of temporary evacuation centres has also risen from 51 yesterday to 57 today across Sarawak.
Floods have struck six divisions due to continuous rain since Jan 23.
The first area to be hit by flood was SK Kuala Muput, Tatau in Bintulu around 9pm on Jan 23.
The affected residents were then evacuated to the temporary evacuation centre at Rumah Steven.
On Jan 28, floods hit several other areas in Bintulu, Serian, Samarahan, Kuching, Sibu, and Miri.
There was also a tragic landslide at Kampung Lereng Bukit in Miri and a fire in Kanowit, Sibu.
