SELANGAU, BINTULU CRASH LEAVES 16-YEAR-OLD BOY DEAD, FATHER INJURED - BINTULU, SARAWAK

TATAU (JANUARY 31,2025): A 16-year-old boy died after the vehicle he was traveling in with his family was involved in an accident at KM130 Jalan Sibu-Bintulu, Selangau, yesterday.

Mukah police chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias identified the deceased as Mohamad Syakirul Faqeh Mohamad Zamari from Miri.

He said Mohamad Syakirul’s 48-year-old father, who was the driver of the pickup truck, sustained chest injuries, while his mother, aged 41, and his six-year-old brother escaped without injuries.

Muhamad Rizal said the family was traveling from Bintulu when the accident occurred around 10am.

“Investigations revealed that the accident happened when the pickup truck, traveling straight from Bintulu towards Sibu, lost control upon reaching KM130 Jalan Sibu-Bintulu, veered off, hit the parked car, and plunged into a ravine, overturning into a ditch,” he said in a statement.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), firefighters from the Tatau fire station and army personnel at the scene had to extricate the teenager from the vehicle using special tools, while the others in the pickup truck were helped by members of the public before Bomba arrived.

Muhamad Rizal said the deceased, who was seated in the back, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel from Selangau Health Clinic due to drowning.

The 22-year-old driver of the other vehicle was not injured in the incident.

Muhamad Rizal said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“The injured victim was initially treated at Selangau Health Clinic. Afterwards, he received outpatient care at Mukah Hospital,” he said.

The deceased’s body was taken to Mukah Hospital for further action.
